Loki star Wunmi Mosaku, who plays high-ranking TVA agent Hunter B-15, has revealed that she hadn’t seen an MCU movie before Black Panther came out in 2018. Black Panther is one of Marvel’s most iconic heroes and fans were overjoyed when Chadwick Boseman first portrayed the character in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. This led to the solo movie Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler, which finally brought the vibrant Afrofuturist utopia of Wakanda to the big screen as T’Challa took on the role of king and faced off against Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan).

Black Panther was a huge critical and commercial success – it was the first MCU film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and ended up winning for its costumes, score, and production design. The film is also the ninth highest-grossing film of all time, cementing Marvel as champions of the box office. Black Panther’s monumental cultural impact cannot be overstated due to its ground-breaking representation both on-screen and behind-the-scenes. As a result, many fans consider it a must-see entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Black Panther was a breakout hit, drawing in viewers who weren't previously familiar with the MCU, so it’s no surprise that it was Mosaku’s first Marvel film. In an interview with Shadow and Act, the Nigerian-British actress spoke about her first introduction to the vast Marvel Cinematic Universe and how much she liked “the world” of Black Panther, praising the complex grey area between heroes and villains in Ryan Coogler’s film. Read the full quote below:

“I was a fan from Black Panther. That was my first Marvel film and I loved it. I felt so seen. I felt so excited and I really felt this whole hero and villain [thing]...it wasn't so clear. It wasn't basic. I really got Killmonger, I got him! [laughs] I was rooting for him too as well. Then I was just like, I like this world...I like this world.”

Black Panther

Mosaku’s praise for the film speaks to the importance of Black Panther’s on-screen representation - as one of the most successful blockbusters to have a predominantly Black cast, it set new records for diversity in cinema. The film’s largely stand-alone plot and vibrant, complex characters additionally make Black Panther a great entry point into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Mosaku mentions, Killmonger’s complex motives and his interesting characterization are some of the best things about the film, and what makes him one of the best MCU villains to date.

Mosaku’s excitement about the world of Wakanda is clearly shared by Marvel – Black Panther is going to be a very important part of the MCU’s future, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever currently in development and scheduled to release on July 8, 2022. In addition to a second film, Marvel is also reportedly working on two different Black Panther spin-off shows, including one centering around Danai Gurira's character Okoye. It seems like there’s a whole host of Black Panther content on the horizon, which is good news for people who love the world that Coogler brought to life just as much as Mosaku clearly does.
