The Loki TV series sets the God of Mischief on a new mission, but why does the Time Variance Authority/TVA chose this particular variant for the job? Marvel Studios is keeping the MCU Phase 4 ball running with its third TV series on Disney+. Following WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it's Loki's time now under the spotlight as he embarks on a fresh adventure separate from Thor.

Despite the character's death at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios brings back the trickster in his pre-redemption version and on the heels of his catastrophic failure to take over Earth in The Avengers. Loki's events are kicked off by the God of Mischief's escape during Avengers: Endgame's New York time heist. Veering off from the proper flow of time effectively made him a target for the TVA and since he's guilty of the charges pressed against him, the Asgardian Prince was almost purged from existence. Luckily for him, Agent Mobius M. Mobius wants to redeem Loki and figured that he could be helpful in his current pursuit of a far more dangerous villain.

However, considering the introduction of variants in the MCU through the show, it's curious why the TVA thought that this version of Loki is best for the mission. While the Marvel Studios project hasn't offered an explicit answer regarding this, the Loki premiere titled "Glorious Purpose" subtly explained behind their decision. in the episode, Mobius sat down the God of Mischief in an effort to find out what makes him tick. Frustrated and perhaps even scared of his predicament, Thor's adopted brother put on a strong facade and resisted answering the questions. However, upon learning of his fate in the Sacred Timeline, Loki eventually mellowed down and became more cooperative. Mobius knew that this variant has been redeemed, so while he's still chaotic and naughty, there's an increased chance that he'll be open to working with him once he finds out about his destiny which is exactly what happened.

This doesn't mean, however, that recruiting this Loki variant wasn't a risk. When Judge Renslayer figured out what Mobius was trying to do, she immediately cautioned the agent and even washed her of any accountability if anything goes awry in his bold idea. But with several minute men already left dead by the mysterious villain, both of them were desperate to do something to stop the killings. Mobius already knew that this version of Loki is capable of redemption and is inclined to do what's right, but he still needed to have additional reassurance just to be on the safe side. This is why he repeatedly asked Loki's thought process in his most recent outing terrorizing Earth. In the end, Mobius got what he wanted: a vulnerable confession from the God of Mischief, admitting that at his core, he's not a bad person.

Still, it's best if Mobius continues to keep his guard up when dealing with this Loki variant. Despite his willingness to cooperate, the character remains mischievous and naughty which means everything is possible when dealing with him. However, as the TVA agent explained in the Loki trailer, they need that unique perspective from the character since the unnamed antagonist that they are hunting is a more evil variant of the God of Mischief.
