Marvel Studios treated viewers to a fresh look at Loki in a trailer that aired during the Golden State Warriors-New Orleans Pelicans NBA game - and here's a breakdown of all the new footage. Marvel's Disney+ shows have been a tremendous success already, transforming the MCU into a transmedia franchise where stories have the potential to weave seamlessly between the films and TV shows. Both WandaVision and The Falcon & the Winter Soldier were hits, and that looks set to continue with several upcoming key releases.

Next out the gate is Loki, which will release in June 2021. As seen in Avengers: Endgame, Earth's Mightiest Heroes unwittingly created a branched timeline in which Loki escaped with the Tesseract back in 2012, and the show follows up on that version of the God of Mischief. According to an official plot synopsis for Loki, this so-called "variant" of the character will be forced to work with a group called the Temporal Variance Authority in order to repair damage to the timeline, or face deletion from the Multiverse. Disney and Marvel have already released full trailers for Loki, promising an action-packed adventure that looks set to cause temporal chaos.

Disney released a fresh trailer for Loki during the Golden State Warriors-New Orleans Pelicans NBA game, one that reuses quite a bit of footage that's already been seen but also includes some new information. Here, we'll focus on every new reveal and MCU Easter egg revealed through the new Loki trailer.

Loki Wields Two Daggers

Loki Dagger

The Loki trailer opens with the God of Mischief shown walking down mysterious tunnels, wielding two daggers. These daggers have long been Loki's preferred weapon, indicating his love of tricking an opponent into letting him get close - and then killing them. Unfortunately the trick failed to pay off in the main timeline, when Thanos anticipated Loki's deception. The opening shot serves to remind viewers who Loki is and how he works, that he really shouldn't be trusted. The architecture suggests this tunnel is the base of the TVA, or the "Time-Keepers" as Loki has dubbed them, in which case the shot may hint Loki is planning to betray them.

Mysterious Soldiers

Loki Mysterious Soldiers

This is followed by a mysterious shot of black-suited soldiers, framed against what appears to be a burning sky. No context is provided for this shot, so it's difficult to say exactly who they are and what their purpose is; the general construction of the shot appears to suggest they are enemies, though, and that they have a sinister purpose. So this group is probably one to watch out for.

Loki On Trial

Mobius M Mobius talking to Loki in an elevator in Loki

Loki is placed on trial for breaking the timeline when he stole the Tesseract, and this NBA trailer presents more information on the role of his defender, Owen Wilson's Mobius M. Mobius. In the comics, he was a junior member of the TVA who rose through the ranks after a run-in with the Fantastic Four, and he even placed She-Hulk on trial after she attempted to rewrite history on one occasion. Loki's version appears to believe the Trickster God wants a shot at redemption, although that doesn't necessarily mean he trusts Loki all that much.

The TVA's City

Loki TVA City

The Loki trailer presents a stunning shot of the TVA's base of operations, a massive city with a spectacular range of architectural styles. It's possible that, in the MCU, the TVA is based in the city of Chronopolis. In the comics, Chronopolis sits outside of time in a realm called Limbo; each block of Chronopolis extends into a different time period, and unless you find the hidden portals connecting the different blocks, it's possible to get lost in Chronopolis forever. The more primitive time-periods are on the outskirts, the more advanced towards the center, and there's a huge citadel in the middle. A city matching the description of Chronopolis was briefly visible in the background of Ant-Man & the Wasp, raising the possibility Marvel has substituted Limbo for the Quantum Realm. If this is Chronopolis in the Quantum Realm, then it's reasonable to assume the Time-Keepers will play a major role in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, given Chronopolis is ultimately captured by Kang the Conqueror, confirmed as the villain of that film.

Loki & A Volcanic Eruption

Loki Volcano

Wherever he goes, Loki leaves devastation in his wake; he's shown joyfully celebrating a volcanic eruption that threatens a mysterious village or town. Given this is a time travel story, it's impossible to say who these people are; the architecture may point towards Roman, suggesting this could be supposed to be the destruction of Pompeii or Herculaneum. Amusingly, the erupting volcano in the background is actually Mount St. Helens, which erupted spectacularly in 1980. The flank is collapsing, generating a lateral blast that will certainly destroy this village in the resulting pyroclastic flows.

A Moon Is Destroyed

Loki Moon Destroyed

It looks as though Loki will also see the Trickster God visit other worlds, because what appears to be an alien moon is shown shattering in the heavens; the massive chunks of rock raining down on the planet will surely destroy it. These shots are followed by a conversation between Loki and Mobius in which his handler accuses him of taking death and destruction wherever he goes, and Loki seems to take that as something of a compliment.

"I Am Loki, And I Am Burdened With Glorious Purpose"

Loki raises his scepter in The Avengers.

There's an amusing callback to The Avengers, with Loki quoting his previous comment; "I am Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose." It's important to note we have no way of knowing if this is the "main variant" Loki, or if it is one from another timeline; if Loki is attempting to repair the broken timeline, it stands to reason he may encounter other versions of himself. This could well be one Loki who is still under the Mind Stone's control.

-

The last few shots of the Loki trailer have already been seen before, including Loki's playing the part of D.B. Cooper, the infamous plane hijacker - and apparently being rescued by Heimdall, which suggests he will cross paths with Asgardians during his missions for the Time-Keepers. One thing's for sure; Loki looks set to be one of the MCU's most exciting projects to date, with a lot of major twists and unexpected turns, as befits a TV series starring the God of Mischief.
