Warning! Contains spoilers for Loki episode 2.

Loki has brought back one of the God of Mischief’s oldest superpowers, which hasn’t been seen in the MCU since Thor 2. The trickster has shown off an impressive range of magical abilities over the course of the franchise, including reality-bending illusions, duplication-casting, and shapeshifting. Now that he’s the star of his own MCU series on Disney+, Loki’s gotten some fresh opportunities to show off his powers in new and interesting ways.

Unfortunately for him, Loki doesn’t get that much room to stretch his abilities in Loki’s first two episodes. The nature of the TVA makes all magic worthless, draining him of his supernatural powers and making him effectively a normal person while within the agency’s walls. Starting in episode 2, however, Loki starts to get back in the action, hunting the other renegade Loki variant alongside TVA analyst Mobius M. Mobius. Loki even gets a chance to explain some of his powers in new detail in the episode, and at the end of it, he pulls out an old power that he’s barely ever used on-screen: telekinesis.

During the climax of Loki episode 2, in his fight against the rogue Loki variant’s various human puppets, Loki uses telekinesis to pull an object from several yards away and blocks an oncoming attack with it. He wields the power much like how Jedi use telekinesis through the Force in Star Wars, stretching out his hand toward the target in question and summoning it to him in the blink of an eye. Given how effective his use of the skill seems to be, it’s curious that Loki hasn’t used his telekinesis more frequently in the MCU.

Loki Throwing Knives

The only other major instance of Loki using his telekinesis in the MCU is during the events of Thor: The Dark World. In that film, after Loki learns of the death of his mother Frigga, he uses telekinesis to destroy the furniture in his Asgardian prison cell. The moment is more a fit of rage and grief than anything, meaning that Loki has almost never used the power during actual combat encounters–or at least, he doesn't seem to. It's been stated that he uses his telekinesis when using his throwing knives and daggers, helping them fly farther and hit harder and more accurately. There might be something to that; after all, Loki rarely misses when his blades are involved.

Now that Loki’s telekinesis has definitely returned, however, it could become a more central part of his magical arsenal. It may take all of his power to contend with the strength of Lady Loki, and clever use of his telekinesis could make the difference in future fights. Considering that daggers are Loki’s weapon of choice, there’s also a lot of potential for him to get even more stylish with his swordplay if he combines it with his telekinesis and is no longer trying to hide it. It should be exciting to see the God of Mischief continue to use his powers in new and interesting ways as Loki continues.
