A new image has been released for Loki — featuring Tom Hiddleston's titular God of Mischief awaiting trial as a prisoner of the TVA. The popular comic book antagonist was first introduced within the MCU during 2011's Thor. Easily the film's breakout character, Loki returned for each of the direct sequels and even multiple team-up adventures. Along the way, he has ranged from a villain, an antihero, to an outright sacrificial hero. His story tragically ended on that note when he was killed by Thanos. Thanks to the time-travel adventures of The Avengers, however, a Loki variant emerged to take his place after Endgame.

After escaping with the Tesseract, Loki's fate was left unknown. Over time, it emerged that his Disney+ series would see him venture through time. That only served to provoke more questions — since the Tesseract's function was traveling across space. Those questions were answered, however, when the Time Variance Authority was revealed to play a central role. As glimpsed in the first official Loki trailer, the time-keeping group caught Loki soon after his aforementioned escape. Overseen by Owen Wilson's Mobius M. Mobius character, Loki will subsequently be recruited to help fix reality by undoing the various timelines he created.

Before all of that, Loki will spend some time as a mere prisoner of the TVA. In a new image released via Empire, fans can now enjoy a fresh glimpse at his incarceration experience. Wearing a grey jumpsuit emblazoned with the Time Variance Authority's logo, Loki can also be seen sporting a no doubt dangerous collar around his neck. The trailer featured several moments of the God of Mischief in such attire, as he's interrogated by Mobius and processed by other agents. Based on his stance, however, it would appear that the image depicts Loki awaiting his trial with Judge Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).  Check it out below:

Predictably, the details regarding Loki's storyline have remained firmly under wraps. As such, it's unclear just how long he'll be a prisoner. Equally, it's unknown whether he will go on the run or if his time-hopping will be in service of preserving the timeline. A safe best will likely be that elements of both will be woven into the episodes. Whatever the case, Loki will see the titular figure embody a variety of different personas — including D.B. Cooper, President Loki, and more. The trailer also implied Loki will visit such significant periods as the destruction of Pompei. For all his frolics, however, he will likely embrace his more heroic side when all is said and done, bringing down a secret villain that might be a separate Loki variant.

Following on the heels of WandaVision, it will further the storyline that'll explode fully in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As such, The Loki series has already been tracked as the most anticipated and popular of all the MCU series on Disney+. Getting to see Hiddleston return to being a more wildcard version of Loki has no doubt fuelled that. Though a portion of the series will see him in captivity, the unusual nature of his prison will make it more interesting to watch unfold than the similar scenarios of the past. As well as serving to fix the recurring problem regarding Loki's powers and abilities, his clashes with the TVA (in and around his trial) will assuredly be equal parts fun and dramatic.
