Richard E. Grant has confirmed his casting in Marvel's Loki Disney+ show. The days of Tom Hiddleston playing the god of mischief in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appeared to be done after Avengers: Infinity War. However, the time travel story in Avengers: Endgame unexpectedly opened up the possibility for him to return. That possibility later became a certainty, when Marvel announced in 2019 that Hiddleston will be reprising his role as Loki in a Disney+ series, which will be set in the alternate reality where Loki escaped from the Avengers in 2012 using the Tesseract.

The potential for Hiddleston to return as a version of Loki who is still quite evil is one of many reasons fans are excited to see the Disney+ show. Unfortunately, work on Loki had to be stopped earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. This came after some exciting additions to the show's cast were announced, including Owen Wilson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and set photos came out that seemed to confirm Sophia Di Martino as Lady Loki. It was also reported that Richard E. Grant had a role in Loki, but the actor's casting was never officially confirmed.

When filming on Loki was taking place, Grant was among the rumored cast members who didn't appear in any set photos. Since Marvel didn't confirm a cast list for the series either, there was a possibility that Grant might not be actually be involved in the show after all, especially since filming was delayed for so long. However, Grant confirmed his involvement in Loki on Twitter today, and shared his excitement for finally getting to work onscreen with Hiddleston. Check out the actor's tweet below:

Grant may have confirmed he'll appear in Loki, but who he'll play in the series has yet to be revealed. When it was first reported he joined the series, it was described as a mystery role who was also a "costumed character." It was also, notably, said that Grant would only appear in one episode of Loki's first season, which could explain why it has taken so long for his casting to be confirmed. So far, the extent of his appearance and what character he will play is unknown, but Grant could be working on the show right now. It was recently confirmed that Loki is filming again, so there's a chance that Grant is on set working on the series now, hence the long-awaited confirmation of his involvement.

One aspect of Grant's confirmation that is intriguing is how the side-by-side photos of he and Hiddleston highlight the similarities between their appearances. Is it possible that Grant is subtly teasing he's playing someone related to Loki in the series, or perhaps even an older version of Loki? It has been confirmed that Loki is a time travel story, and there's already been potential evidence that other versions of the god of mischief will be included. If Loki already includes a young Loki and a female Loki, an old version of Loki played by Grant could be included too. Unfortunately, with Loki not coming to Disney+ until sometime in 2021, it could still be a long while before Grant's role in the series is finally revealed.
