Loki director Kate Herron won't debunk the fan theory that Peggy Carter made an appearance in episode 1 of the Disney+ show. Following WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier earlier this year, Marvel's expansion onto Disney+ continued with the 6-week run of Loki, a series centered entirely on Tom Hiddleston's fan favorite God of Mischief. Picking up with the version of Loki who escaped with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame, the series finds the trickster running afoul of the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization tasked with maintaining the proper flow of time.

It was Loki's first introduction to the TVA that seemingly included a major Easter egg for Marvel fans. Back in Loki episode 1, when Hiddleston's character is wandering the halls of the TVA, a woman with dark hair and period clothing can be spotted walking alongside a Hunter. Fans immediately theorized the woman was actually Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), perhaps after getting entangled with the TVA following the time-bending events of Avengers: Endgame.

The rest of Loki's run never acknowledged the woman again, so one could easily insist she was in fact Peggy. Aiding to this is series director Herron, who was asked to comment on the potential Peggy cameo during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Herron started to give an answer, but quickly changed her mind. "I would say-- [Laughs] No, I think the conversation should continue!" she declared, opting instead to let the theory continue unpruned.

Peggy Carter makes a potential cameo in the TVA in Loki.

Loki contained many Marvel Easter eggs for fans to uncover, particularly in episode 5's The Void. With so many alternate versions of Loki (and a Frog Thor) popping up, it would make sense for episode 1's mystery woman to be a Peggy Carter variant. As seen through her ABC series Agent Carter, Peggy isn't opposed to jumping into situations she perhaps shouldn't, and it's funny to consider a Peggy who veered off her chosen timeline and was arrested by the TVA.

However, with Herron staying mum on the possibility, Peggy's potential inclusion in Loki will likely never be confirmed. The character is set to play a major role in the next Marvel series headed to Disney+, the animated What If...?. In that series, Peggy will take the super-soldier serum to become Captain Carter, a route that likely would've gotten her in trouble with the TVA. That's not to say What If...? will explicitly connect to Loki, but it's a fascinating explanation for how she might've popped up in the show. May this theory never, ever get debunked.
