Loki head writer Michael Waldron has revealed that he shares a love of jet skis with Mobius - and that he has an appreciation for the jet ski-themed memes that Loki fans have been creating and sharing. The latest Disney+/Marvel series centers on Tom Hiddleston as the fan-favorite God of Mischief. After Avengers: Endgame’s time heist results in 2012’s Loki escaping with the Tesseract, he is arrested by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and branded a variant for deviating from the so-called Sacred Timeline. TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) recruits this Loki to help hunt a particularly dangerous variant, but the duo ends up unraveling a major TVA-related conspiracy – and meeting many different variations of Loki along the way.

Along with Sophie di Martino’s Sylvie, Mobius has quickly become a beloved character upon his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Loki. Not only because of his willingness to forgive Loki and play a part in his redemption, but also because of his love of jet skis. Though at first Mobius’s collection of jet ski magazines appears to be a quirky hobby, the reveal in Loki episode 3 “Lamentis” that TVA agents are actually variants with their memories wiped gives it a lot more emotional weight. It's even been theorized that the character's fascination with 1990s culture is a hint to where – and when – Mobius actually comes from.

Now, head writer and executive producer Michael Waldron has revealed that Mobius’s fascination with jet skis was inspired by his own love for the watercraft. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Waldron discussed his admiration for jet skis and how Loki has inspired all kinds of fan creations, citing this adorable Loki/Luca crossover art. Read his full quote below when asked about whether he’s seen the jet ski memes:

“I have. I love that. My wife just sent me that Luca one. Look, I love jet skis. I'll reveal myself as a jet ski lover, so I'm with Mobius on that. I'm glad to see jet skis getting some love in the zeitgeist.”

An appreciation of jet skis does seem like an odd detail for Mobius to retain about his former life, so Waldron’s love of them explains the time traveler’s interest in them on a metatextual level. Whether it was intended as a throwaway joke or it indicates something significant about Mobius’s past, fans clearly approve of this character detail. Even Owen Wilson’s fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe stars are seemingly in on the joke, with Shang-Chi star Simu Liu sharing a photo of himself riding a jet ski and apparently enjoying “Mobius’s dream life.”

With only a few days left before the finale of Loki premieres on Disney+, many will no doubt be wondering about Mobius’s fate and whether he’ll ever get his memories back. It can be argued that the series is all about the God of Mischief finally discovering what his glorious purpose is – and that Mobius’s glorious purpose is to get the jet ski ride he’s been dreaming of. However Loki ends, it’s certain that fans will be championing Mobius and his love of jet skis for all time, always.
