New Loki merchandise has profound implications for the MCU's time travel model - and suggests the timeline could be about to change significantly. The Marvel Cinematic Universe officially expanded on to Disney+ with WandaVision proving a tremendous success. But that show is only the first of many to debut on Disney's streaming service, and marketing and promotion are beginning to kick into gear for the next shows.

One of the most exciting upcoming Marvel Studios TV shows is Loki, which will see Tom Hiddleston return as the Trickster God. Although Thanos killed Loki in Avengers: Infinity War, in Avengers: Endgame, Earth's surviving heroes unwittingly created a new timeline in which Loki escaped with the Tesseract shortly after the Battle of New York. Loki will continue to explore that timeline while also seeing the titular antihero join forces with a group called the Temporal Variance Authority (TVA), a bureaucratic organization dedicated to policing the timeline. No doubt things won't go well, given Loki prefers chaos and the TVA stand for order.

Official merchandise for Loki is beginning to become available on sites online, and Murphy's Multiverse has noticed the most interesting to date. An official T-shirt on Zazzle features Loki himself, along with what's presumably a key line from the show; "The timeline wants to break free." It's unclear who says the line, although Loki is most likely justifying the havoc he is about to wreak by claiming he is serving creation's natural chaos.

But this does raise an intriguing question; what if Loki is right? What if the timelines are indeed attempting to break free of the TVA's policing, meaning the Multiverse defaults to continuous expansion, and its growth has been restricted by the will of sentient beings who try to keep time in some semblance of order? The idea sounds very similar to Terry Pratchett's novel Thief of Time (wherein the History Monks work to ensure that yesterday never happens after tomorrow and that tomorrow always comes after today). No doubt the MCU's approach will be far less comedic, and in fact, Loki's comments may well explain why even Avengers: Endgame's writers and directors disagree with how time travel works in the MCU. There is no consistent time travel model and temporal mechanics because the default is chaos, and any order is artificially imposed.

This may have significant implications for Marvel's Multiversal stories, not least because they appear to be focusing on Wanda Maximoff. According to WandaVision, Wanda is a "Scarlet Witch," a sorceress who wields so-called Chaos Magic - described as the power of spontaneous creation. A Scarlet Witch may possess the ability to create entirely new timelines, and that the association between such untamed creation and chaos is deliberate on Marvel's part. If so, the TVA may not be particularly pleased to learn a Scarlet Witch has emerged on Earth - and Loki's new characters could be key enemies for the Avengers in the future.
