Loki may be a devious trickster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but an Avengers: Endgame-like scene in his upcoming Disney+ show with his mother Frigga could pave the way for his redemption. From discovering his Frost Giant origins to faking his own death multiple times, to then subsequently facing his real death at the hands of Thanos, the God of Mischief has been around since the earliest days of the MCU. Now, he is set to headline his own Loki series on Disney+ in June, though this version of the character is one that viewers have not seen since 2012.

Brought to life onscreen by Tom Hiddleston, Loki has made numerous MCU appearances, starting with the Sir Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor in 2011 and most recently in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. After battling to save Asgard from Hela's assault in Thor: Ragnarok, Loki and Thor appeared to be out of the woods and on their way to Earth before Thanos attacked and killed Loki in his pursuit of the Space Stone. However, after the Time Heist went awry in Avengers: Endgame, Loki was able to escape using the Tesseract, and the Loki show picks up from there, alongside Owen Wilson's Mobius M. Mobius and the Time Variance Authority.

With this new Loki variant having not yet experienced many of the same things as the original Loki has, there does still exist within him a chance for redemption akin to the profound journey Thor went on in Avengers: Endgame. This is shown when Thor encounters his mother, Frigga, and her magical powers confirm that he is not the version of Thor that exists in her own timeline. After attempting to exact his vengeance upon Earth, Asgard, and Jotunheim, Loki has plenty of need for redemption, and a similar chance encounter with his mother could afford him that, while also pushing him to embrace his magical powers from her and become the true God of Mischief.

President Loki smiles in Loki

Various trailers and synopses provided for the Loki show have revealed that this variant of the God of Mischief will be recruited by the Time Variance Authority to help fix the broken timeline after the events of Avengers: Endgame. This may involve dealing with other variants of Loki himself. As part of his duty to travel through time and fix the timeline, there is also a chance that Loki could come into contact with his Frigga, as his brother did.

Despite the fact that this version of Loki is unaware of the future that befalls his mother, there is a chance that this encounter could very much pave the way for Loki to return to the better-natured version of the character that audiences saw in Thor: Ragnarok. Frigga allays the fears that Thor has around his own flaws, and she could well do something similar for Loki, while also reminding him of the power he holds as the God of Mischief. His trickery and deceit will no doubt come to the fore in his series, but a heartfelt scene of redemption with his mother could mirror Thor's journey, strengthen his bond to Frigga, and remind him of his magical powers that came from her.

Not only could this mother-son scene introduce the most powerful and confident version of Loki yet seen in the MCU, but transforming Loki into an antihero may be the best possible chance of redemption for the character's future. Frigga's kindness was not lost in the first two Thor movies, and her impact on Loki was certainly made apparent in the jail cell scene immediately following her death at the hands of Malekith and the Dark Elves. If anyone can redeem the 2012 variant of the God of Mischief during his time with the Time Variance Authority, it is surely the woman who meant most to Loki.
