The Norse God of Mischief, Loki, absolutely comes to mind when it comes to LGBTQ characters in Marvel Comics and beyond. And as Marvel puts out a new comic for Pride Month this year, Loki and his variants will take center stage in a brand new cover.

In 2021 Marvel produced an anthology titled Marvel's Voices: Pride that showcased a wide range of LGBTQ creators and characters. The book received a GLAAD Media Award nomination and Marvel has brought it back again this year. This year's will feature characters such as Moondragon, Hercules, and the Young Avengers. Creators featured in the book will be writers Charlie Jane Andrews, Alyssa Wong, Grace Freud, Andrew Wheeler, Christopher Cantwell, Ira Madison, and Danny Lore. Artwork will appear in the book from Stephen Byrne, Scott B. Henderson, Brittney Williams, and more.

In a new announcement, Marvel has put together a variant cover for this year's anthology that will showcase the notorious God of Mischief himself. Illustrated by the amazing Amy Reeder, the cover has Loki and many of his variants standing on a twisty, turny, and windy rainbow road. Several of them are even noteworthy from their appearance in Loki's MCU Disney+ show. There's Kid Loki, Alligator Loki, and even an older version of Loki in his classic costume. Of course, Lady Loki is there, too.

Loki has a unique place in LGBTQ Pride as he embodies the genderfluid character of mythology. He has been both a man, woman, and neither both historically-speaking and in the Marvel Universe. Marvel has certainly leaned into this fact by putting him on the cover for its biggest Pride book of the year.

During Johnny Cates and Nic Klein's time on Thor, Odin died and there were a lot of changes in Asgard that affected the God of Mischief. As far as his current place in the Marvel Universe, Loki will soon take center stage in Defenders: Beyond by Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez. It will be a five issue series that's also set to launch during Pride Month and will see the return of a Loki variant that showed up in the Ewing-helmed series Loki: Agent of Asgard. So even though he isn't directly showcased in the anthology, it makes sense for Marvel to want to bring Loki to the forefront as he has a long journey ahead of him beginning in June.
