The MCU's first appearance of a Kang variant came through He Who Remains in Loki, and the Multiverse Saga presents a potentiality for his return. He Who Remains was played by Jonathan Majors, who will also portray the Kang the Conqueror variant that will debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In Loki, however, He Who Remains was the secret head of the TVA, found by Loki and Sylvie in the Citadel at the End of Time.

He Who Remains was revealed to be a more benevolent variant of Kang who put a stop to the war waged by his less good-natured counterparts. In doing so, He Who Remains crafted the MCU Sacred Timeline, which Sylvie reversed by killing him, triggering the return of the MCU's splintered multiverse. By killing He Who Remains, however, the MCU has evolved in a way that allows Jonathan Majors' Loki character to return in the Multiverse Saga's future.

The MCU's Multiverse Is Locked In A Cycle Of Creation & Destruction

MCU Loki Multiverse

Essentially, the MCU's multiverse exists in a cycle, and that means He Who Remains will inevitably resurface in a new universe. As shown in Loki's season 1 finale, He Who Remains managed to end the Multiversal War by pruning each of the universes spawned from branching timelines into one singular Sacred Timeline, keeping the lost realities at bay through the TVA. After Sylvie killed He Who Remains, however, the multiverse began regrowing from those cut branches, spreading across every point in time, as shown in Loki's visual representation of the multiverse.

Without the TVA to prune these branching MCU timelines, the multiverse exploded into life once again. One thing Marvel has made clear about its multiverse is that the possibilities of such a concept are endless. This means that, in one of the universes that arose from He Who Remains' death, it is a certainty that He Who Remains has reappeared once again, just like his evil Kang counterparts. With universes spawning from every point in time, it is an impossibility for He Who Remains to stay dead.

He Who Remains' Return Should Be Inevitable In The Multiverse Saga

He Who Remains respawning via the very multiverse his death triggered would not only see the return of an incredibly interesting character played perfectly by Jonathan Majors, it would also make sense for the MCU's overarching story. As is clear from Marvel Studios' announcements at SDCC 2022, the Multiverse Saga will culminate in a battle against Kang across the multiverse. With both the Avengers and other heroes introduced during Phase 4 largely inexperienced in multiverse matters, it would make sense for them to seek an expert's help.

While this advice may come through the introduction of the Fantastic Four in the MCU or the continuation of Doctor Strange and Clea's incursion story, Loki could become crucial in leading the Avengers to find He Who Remains. Seeking aid from the man responsible for keeping variants like Kang the Conqueror nullified throughout history would certainly make sense, and can provide a way for He Who Remains to stay involved in the Multiverse Saga. Additionally, the return of one of Phase 4's most intriguing new characters would tie Loki even more intrinsically to the MCU's Phases 5 and 6.
