Warning: SPOILERS for Loki episode 3, "Lamentis"

Loki episode 3 effectively squashes theories that the show will feature Vormir. Introduced in Avengers: Infinity War as the location of the Soul Stone and the place Red Skull was banished to after Captain America: The First Avenger, the planet was also where Gamora was sacrificed by Thanos. Thanks to the Avengers: Endgame's time heist, Vormir once again factored in the MCU and was the final resting place for Black Widow, who sacrificed her life to regain the Soul Stone.

Since it was debuted fairly late in the Infinity Saga, not much else is known about the barren planet. Aside from being where the Soul Stone was originally located, it's also the center of the universe's Celestial existence. Given this, it's understandable that there are lingering questions about Vormir that many are looking forward to being answered. Thus, when a similar-looking setting was featured in the promotional footage released for Loki, it was theorized that the Marvel Studios series would revisit Vormir.

As revealed in this week's offering, though, that's not the case. Instead, Loki and Sylvie found themselves on Lamentis-1, the purple-tinged moon of the planet Lamentis, which was breaking apart and threatening swift destruction of Lamentis-1. The planet and its moon are from where Loki episode 3 takes its title, "Lamentis." In the comics, the Lamentis Outworld was located at the very edge of Kree space. In the MCU, its habitable moon is on the brink of destruction in 2077, with Lamentis-1 facing inevitable annihilation. Unfortunately, that doomed population included Loki and Sylvie, who were accidentally transported to Lamentis-1 on the eve of its destruction in their desperation to escape Judge Renslayer and her Hunters. From there, the rest of the episode was spent on Lamentis-1 as the pair attempted to escape the planet before its destruction. Each scheme they came up with failed, however, leaving them still trapped there at the end of the episode.

Loki Episode 3 Lamentis 1

Considering its aesthetic similarity to Lamentis-1, the initial assumption that it was Vormir made sense. There was also a specific shot used in the show's marketing of Loki and a woman sitting peacefully on the moon that strengthened the Vormir speculation. Now, that woman is known to be Sylvie, but then, speculation ran rampant that it was Black Widow, as she sported the same hairstyle as Black Widow circa 2012's The Avengers, and the purple lighting seemingly tinged the woman's hair red. Since Nat died in Vormir, there was a belief from some corners that it might be the MCU's way of revisiting the character's controversial death. Lastly, the fact that the Infinity War and Endgame planet was also previously referenced in Loki episode 2 as one of the places that Sylvie bombed further lent some credence to the idea.

Since Loki episode 3 ended on a cliffhanger, Lamentis-1 will still be the setting for at least part of the next episode. While Loki and Sylvie have seemingly run out of options to escape the impending destruction of the moon, it's inevitable that, ultimately, they will find a way out of it. As for Vormir, there's very little chance that it will factor into the series now, but it's entirely possible the mysterious planet could show up in future Marvel projects.
