Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Loki episode 2.

Loki episode 2 briefly shows another Marvel Cinematic Universe David Schwimmer lookalike - but where does he appear, and is his appearance significant? Loki has managed to provide ample references to other MCU installments in the span of two episodes - a feat largely owing to the fact its plot is inherently based around the events of Avengers: Endgame and how they interlink with the original Avengers film.

That said, the show has also made a lot of affectionate nods outside of the realm of its major plot. The first episode references D.B Cooper - the alias of an as of yet still unsolved mystery covered in great detail by documentaries - and Loki also alludes to the Scream franchise with one of the God of Mischief's more creative threats. The second episode has continued this stockpile via both the store name Roxxcart - likely a play on the Roxxon Corporation's name - and perhaps more bizarrely, through what appears to be another David Schwimmer lookalike, following in WandaVision's referential footsteps.

Towards the end of the episode, the Time Variance Authority offices are shown erupting into chaos in the wake of Lady Loki's plan to fracture the timeline seemingly paying off. As the office crew begins to scramble to attention, a lone worker states "That's not possible," - a worker who conveniently happens to look dangerously similar to Friends star David Schwimmer. Given the show has introduced the concept of variants - individuals who stray from their intended timeline path and thus must be either destroyed or recruited by the TVA - this could well be a subtle nod to WandaVision by seemingly using a variant of David Lengel's character in the previous MCU show, as many also thought he bore an uncanny resemblance to David Schwimmer. However, this may also merely be a happy accident, as the Loki role is not played by Lengel, but rather Jesse Gavin, who is given the title of Analyst #1 in the episode's credits.

Loki-David-Schwimmer

Accidental or not, these casting choices provide a bizarre but wonderful aspect to the MCU, as it allows audiences to focus on the characters and actors outside of the main roles in the franchise. While the limelight is naturally held by the likes of Iron Man and Batman in superhero films and shows, it still pays to keep in mind the magic that the supporting crew adds to the finished product, as they provide countless background jokes - and the occasional Friends lookalike moment.

Though it's unlikely the MCU will ever bring about some sort of wild Freinds crossover, WandaVision and Loki have ensured that this whimsical theoretical scenario would be surprisingly well stocked with variants to choose from -all with varying mustache levels to boot. Hopefully, these casting calls continue to be the franchise's most unexpected blessing, as these David Schwimmer lookalike moments would only become more noticeable - and more delightful - as time goes on.
