Like many of the most recent iterations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the series Loki aims to be more than escapism. Instead, it engages with some of the most fundamental questions facing human life: the nature of time, whether people have free will, and how far someone should go in the pursuit of freedom.

It is also full of characters who, in ways large and small, show how brave (or cowardly) they are as they each take a stance regarding the moral position that the Time Variance Authority should possess in its protection of the Sacred Timeline.

Casey

Even though he is a relatively minor character in the series, Casey makes quite an impression. He is arguably one of the funniest characters in the show, in part because, as someone firmly embedded in the TVA, he doesn’t seem to know much about the basic elements of human life.

Though he isn’t exactly cowardly, he also doesn’t show a great deal of bravery, and it’s very easy for him to be intimidated by the likes of Loki.

Miss Minutes

Miss Minutes is one of the few characters to appear in Loki that seems to know everything that’s going on. This largely seems to be a function of the fact that she is the being that He Who Remains imbues with the entire knowledge of the Sacred Timeline and the Time Variance Authority more generally.

It looks like she has a deep relationship with He Who Remains and, given the enormous power that he wields, the fact that she continues to serve his demands reveals a significant amount of bravery.

He Who Remains

Jonathan Majors has established himself as an impressive talent in Hollywood, with a number of notable roles on his resume. He brings his considerable charisma to the character of He Who Remains, who has decided that he should be the one in charge of ensuring that the various elements of the Multiverse do not go to war with one another.

While his methods might be questionable, there’s no doubt that he is courageous for deciding to shoulder this tremendous burden, sacrificing his own agency and freedom in the process.

Kid Loki

When Loki is sent into the Void, he encounters various other Variants of himself, including the character known as Kid Loki. In addition to being one of the most powerful and respected of the many Lokis (due in part to the fact that he killed Thor in his own timeline), he is also a very fearless character, willing to face down numerous threats, including the sinister being known as President Loki.

Given how formidable the latter is--and how willing to kill anyone who gets in his way--that is a testament to Kid Loki’s courage.

Classic Loki

Richard E. Grant is another respected actor who lends his formidable screen presence to this series, appearing as a Variant. He is one of the bravest characters in that he actually sacrifices himself to the creature known as Alioth, a being that almost no one else is able to face at all, let alone try to distract.

The fact that he is willing to do all of this for a Variant that he has known for a very short period of time demonstrates just how exemplary he is as a character.

Mobius

Owen Wilson is one of the most charming actors in Hollywood, as he has shown time and again, including in his Loki performance. He immediately imbues the character Mobius with a charisma that is hard to resist.

Just as importantly, however, Mobius demonstrates that he is spirited enough to start challenging the dictates laid down by the Time Variance Authority. In fact, he’s one of the first to believe that there might be more to what Loki is telling him than others are willing to believe, even if this puts him at odds with his friends and allies at the TVA.

Hunter B-15

Loki faces many challenges and hostile forces at the TVA, but Hunter B-15 is arguably one of those who dislikes him the most. She sees him as a profound threat to the TVA and everything that it stands for and, since she is at first a true believer, she wants to do away with him as quickly as possible.

However, she slowly realizes that she, like so many others, has been duped into believing a lie, and in a audacious move decides to rebel against the very organization to which she has devoted her life.

Ravonna Renslayer

Gugu Mbatha-Raw brings a great deal of power to her portrayal of Ravonna Renslayer, one of the most powerful and inflexible members of the TVA. Like so many others, she has bought entirely into the system, and she reacts angrily when it is all revealed to be a facade.

She shows a tremendous amount of guts, first in being willing to defend the TVA against all of the threats against it and then, at the end, deciding that it’s more important to pursue free will than it is to owe her allegiance to a false system.

Sylvie

Sylvie is, of course, one of the two main variants of Loki, and her life has been, in its own way, even more traumatic and tragic than Hiddleston's version.

However, despite her troubled upbringing, she has grown up into a fierce warrior, someone willing and able and strong enough to challenge all of the supposed authorities that exist to try to pin her down and force her to obey the rules. And, in the end, she is also daring enough to take on He Who Remains himself, even though she can’t know the full consequences of her actions.

Loki

Loki is arguably one of the best antiheroes in the entire MCU, and he is capable of acts of great cruelty. As the series goes on, however, he shows his bravery in a multitude of ways both great and small.

He’s bold enough to take on the TVA (no small thing, considering how powerful and ruthless the organization can be), but he’s also courageous enough to open up his cynical heart to Sylvie, and their romance is one of the most genuinely touching things about the entire series.
