UPDATE: Logan director James Mangold says there is NO post-credits scene.

-

Ever since Marvel Studios popularized the post-credits scene with Iron Man in 2008 - during which the studio teased the eventual arrival of The Avengers that came true four years later - other adaptations of comic book superheroes had adopted the practice. For their part, 20th Century Fox have begun to include mid- and post-credit scenes with their X-Men universe entries, using them to tease Apocalypse after X-Men: Days of Future Past or reveal the inclusion of Cable in Deadpool 2. However, it seemed that wouldn't be the case with their latest X-Men entry, Logan.

Late last year, it was reported that Deadpool himself Ryan Reynolds had shot a short scene for Logan that many theorized would be a post-credits scene. But, when Logan began rolling out advance screenings ahead of the film's official release, no such scene was included - in fact, the cut of the movie shown at these screenings didn't include a mid- or post-credits scene at all. More recently, a rumor surfaced that Fox was adding a top secret post-credits scene to Logan, and a new report confirms these rumors.

Collider is reporting that Logan will include a post-credits scene, but it won't be shown until the movie's wide release next week. According to the report, it's unclear what the scene will consist of or whether it will be inserted in the middle of the credits or at the very end.

Logan (2017) - Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) at the Liberty Motel

So far, Fox has kept as tight a lid on Logan spoilers as possible - despite footage screenings from the film starting as early as December. The film synopsis revealed Logan takes place in the "near future" when Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is caring for an older Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). But, the arrival of a young mutant named Laura (Dafne Keen) - who has not specifically been referred to as Marvel Comics' X-23, although all evidence supports it being the case - who is "being pursued by dark forces." Plus, according to Jackman himself, Logan is said to be his last turn as Wolverine.

Of course, considering the earlier report that Reynolds filmed a scene as Deadpool for Logan, this is the most likely candidate for the post-credits scene Fox is adding. Shortly after that report surfaced Reynolds, Jackman, and Logan director James Mangold vehemently denied it was true - Reynolds even pointed out that the Merc with a Mouth "wouldn’t mix with the tone" of Logan (and those who have seen the film would likely agree).

That said, Fox's post-credits scenes haven't always directly connected to their respective films. Certainly, Deadpool's post-credits teaser included all the humor and fun of the larger movie, but had more to do with previewing its sequel. Plus, the scene featuring a young Apocalypse at the end of Days of Future Past left plenty of casual moviegoers scratching their heads. So, with Deadpool 2 among the confirmed upcoming X-Men films - and Reynolds and Jackman's continued teases of a potential future Wolverine and Deadpool project - it seems likely that's the post-credits scene accompanying Logan. Or, perhaps it's teasing an X-23 spinoff. Since Fox has been so diligent in keeping this scene under wraps, we'll likely have to wait until Logan hits theaters before any specifics are confirmed.
