Logan has run one of the most prolific social media campaigns in recent memory for a Marvel Studios movie. An entire scrapbook could be made from the plethora of photos (both black-and-white and color) that have been shared from the movie. There’s still just a single trailer to go by as far as how the final film will look and feel. Fortunately, Logan’s dark, gritty aesthetic has been driven home by the many photos shared via the social media accounts of both the movie itself and its makers.

The official synopsis for Logan is now known, thanks to Hugh Jackman’s Twitter account, while the “Wponx” Instagram page has revealed a wealth of details from the movie through artful imagery. Director James Mangold has also shared his own set of photos in the lead-up to Logan’s March release, interspersed with classic images of his favorite directors and movie stars. A new set of photos illustrates the director’s knack for stark imagery and serves to hype Logan’s impending premiere even more.

Mangold recently shared three sharp new photos from the set of Logan to his Twitter account. They depict Logan (Hugh Jackman), Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and Laura Kinney/X-23 (Dafne Keen) staring at the camera and conveying plenty of raw emotion in their expressions. The noir-ish lighting and austere quality of the photos’ subjects fall right in line with the whole aesthetic and tone of Logan’s social media campaign so far.

While these look like they could be stills from the movie, they are actually snapshots from the set. Mangold tweeted the details of the camera used to snap the photos, down to the aperture and f-stop settings, which suggests he (or a set photographer) simply took a moment to grab snapshots of certain moments on the set. He shot the photos with a Leica S DSLR camera, which is known for its sharp quality in medium-length photos like the ones seen above.

Mangold’s Twitter shares added some high-quality imagery to Logan’s growing catalog of sharp, striking photos from the movie and continued its prolific social media campaign in impressive fashion. The R-rated Logan has long been characterized as a violent Western that follows a weathered title character as he takes care of Charles Xavier. Unfortunately, both mutants’ powers - and health in general - are deteriorating. The new photos have only heightened the focus on character drama that is prevalent in the movie.

There’s still at least one more trailer for Logan to come out, which makes the photos shared on social media the bulk of the movie’s promotion to this point. It’s still unclear just how much the movie itself will live up to the high quality of images shared on Twitter and Instagram. But the many photos shared from Logan have certainly been an effective hype machine for a movie that promises to be as dark and gritty as any Marvel production.
