Locke & Key season 2 expanded the show's narrative by revealing the secret history of the keys, a history even the Locke family were unaware of. The conflict between the Lockes and Dodge, a demon unleashed from the demon world, escalated to the point where the entire town was at risk due to the creation of a new key. Fortunately, the Lockes were able to respond by creating keys of their own, and they ultimately destroyed Dodge. They believe the threats are almost over, with Eden, a schoolgirl who's also now possessed by a demon, serving as the last remaining loose end. Unfortunately, as the final scenes of the Locke & Key season 2 finale proved, this is just the quiet before the storm.
This dramatic cliffhanger sets up a third season even more explosive than the ones that have come before it. Fortunately, Netflix is clearly confident of Locke & Key's continued success, so season 3 will indeed be released. Here's all we know about Locke & Key season 3.
Is Locke & Key Season 3 Happening?
Netflix ordinarily waits to see how successful a show will be before renewing it for another season, but Locke & Key season 1 was evidently enough of a hit to lead them to take a different approach. The show was renewed for both a second and third season, allowing showrunner Carlton Cuse to set up an overarching narrative and explaining why Locke & Key season 2 ended with the appropriate title "Cliffhanger." Production on Locke & Key season 3 began in May 2021 and wrapped in September. Assuming a similar delay between production and release to season 2, it could stream around Spring 2022.
Everything We Know About Locke & Key Season 3's Story
Locke & Key has gone beyond the graphic novel and is now blazing its own trail. Although the Lockes' main villain Dodge was defeated in season 2, Eden used the Echo Key to bring back Captain Frederick Gideon. Gideon was the British soldier who had been possessed by the first demon to come through the portal and who had proved to be one of the most bloodthirsty figures in America's Revolutionary War. Eden was astounded to recognize the demon possessing Gideon, apparently one of the most powerful beings in the demon dimension, but she wasn't quick-witted enough to realize she couldn't control him. Ultimately, she was dropped down the very well she had summoned Gideon from, presumably to her death. Locke & Key season 3 will undoubtedly explore the consequences of Gideon's return.
No doubt the Lockes will discover a number of new keys to help them in their battle against Gideon; it's likely one of these will be the Timeshift Key, which allows people to view the past. Meanwhile, the Lockes will have to deal with a very different situation in the family as Bode has used the Memory Key to allow their mother Nina to remember magic. Simultaneously, Tyler has chosen to move on, associating magic with too much heartache and pain, and he will forget everything that happened at the Keyhouse.
Locke & Key Season 3 Cast: Who Will Return?
The cast of Locke & Key season 3 will change a little, with Genevieve Kang, Lasla De Oliveira, and Griffin Gluck all leaving because their characters - Tyler's girlfriend Jackie and various incarnations of the demon Dodge - were killed. Brendan Hines' Josh Bennett and his daughter Jamie (played by Liyou Abere) will most likely become major characters, however, given they are descendants of Captain Gideon, and Brendan has a deep knowledge of his historical atrocities. Beyond that, no doubt there will be some surprises in Locke & Key season 3.
