After some speculation, Netflix has announced that it renewed YA horror show Locke & Key — here's what that will mean for the upcoming season two.

Locke & Key follows Tyler, Kinsey and Bode Locke as they attempt to pick up the pieces from their father's murder. Their mom moves them back east to their father's ancestral home, Keyhouse. While getting to know their new home, the Locke kids discover a plethora of mysterious keys with magical powers hidden all over the house. As it turns out, there's a demon named Dodge who is connected to the keys, and she will stop at nothing until she possesses all of them.

Showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill were so confident on the show's chances at being renewed that they created an unofficial writers' room before the first season even debuted. Naturally, that meant that they ended season one with plenty of cliffhangers and unresolved stories to be explored in a potential second season. Now that they have been granted that opportunity, here are some plot points that are likely to be covered in Locke & Key season two.

Locke & Key: Ellie's Fate

Ellie was a friend of the Lockes' late father and one of the original Keeper of the Keys, so her fate the end of the season came as quite the shock. The Omega Key and the mysterious Black Door it opens was a central mystery of the first season. Ellie informed the kids that it is a portal to another dimension. Whatever came out of it was bad, but no one really knew what happened when something went through that portal. So when she is accidentally tossed through the door, thanks to an unfortunate case of mistaken identity, Ellie's fate is left up in the air.

But audiences never get a glimpse of Ellie's actual death. Not to mention, she provides a lot of exposition on the history of the keys, Keyhouse and the Locke kids' dad. Killing her off would be a missed opportunity for Locke & Key season two. Perhaps that means a rescue mission is in order?

Locke & Key Could Bring More Teen Angst

Locke & Key is based on a series of comic books of the same name. The original source material leans heavily into the horror genre and just happens to feature kids as its subject. The show gravitates more toward the fantasy and teen drama elements of the Locke & Key — that combination is Netflix's bread and butter, after all. The older Locke kids, Tyler and Kinsey, are high schoolers, which means there's a lot of drama and angst that goes with that. As the oldest, Tyler spent much of the show's first season grappling with his anger over his father's sudden death and his new place as man of the house.

Kinsey, on the other hand, is in a more precarious situation. Thanks to the help of one of the keys, she physically removed the fear from her head. With her new-found confidence, she attracted the attention of two boys at school. She decides to pursue a relationship with one. But the final moments of the first season reveal that he is actually Dodge, just disguised with one of the keys.

Will Locke & Key Introduce New Keys and Demons?

The first season of Locke & Key features about a dozen keys. The comics feature far more keys. Without a doubt, Locke & Key season two will borrow more keys from its source material. The first season combined a couple keys to make some unique to the show. Audiences can likely expect more of that. With more keys, more demons will follow. Whether that means Dodge has more to do or new keys unlock new demons, Locke & Key season two will have plenty to work with.
