Following reports that DC Studios is doing a massive restructuring of the DC Universe, Jason Momoa may play a new character in the franchise. The DCU (formerly known as the DCEU) is going in a new direction as DC Studios was officially launched on November 1. James Gunn and Peter Safran were tapped as the co-CEOs of the newly formed division, as it replaces DC Films, which was previously led by Walter Hamada. As the duo is still working out their 10-year plan for the DCU, new reports have raised concerns for some of the ongoing franchises.

DC Studios are reportedly doing a massive overhaul to the DCU, and one of the ramifications is specifically affecting the Aquaman series. Momoa, who has starred as the Justice League-based hero since 2016, supposedly doesn't have any further Aquaman films coming up after his 2023 sequel. However, The Hollywood Reporter heard that the Aquaman star would instead lead a different movie franchise based on the world of DC. Momoa, Safran, Gunn, or anyone involved at Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to comment on the reports.

Who Could Momoa Play In The New DCU?

Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Lobo from DC Comics

It's key to remember that these reports are only claiming that sources are hearing that Momoa might lead another DCU franchise. For now, nothing is set in stone as these reports haven't been confirmed by the involved parties. Gunn also has a track record of clearing the air on social media whenever false reports come out, and that may very well happen in the coming days. Since Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has yet to hit theaters, it's impossible to tell yet if the 2023 installment will truly be the end of Momoa's franchise. The top DC character that Momoa is already being theorized for is none other than the cocky bounty hunter, Lobo.

There are several reasons for why Lobo is the likeliest DC character that Momoa may be playing after portraying Aquaman. In recent weeks, the intergalactic bounty hunter has been in the headlines due to Gunn sharing cryptic teases of potential DC characters that may enter the DCU, and Lobo was one of them. Momoa has also been hyping up a mystery project that is happening under Gunn and Safran's regime that is a dream come true to him. Even though Momoa has not given concrete responses to the Lobo speculations, he has stated many times that he is one of his all-time favorite characters, which is part of fueling the theory.

Until DC Studios and/or Momoa come out to give a clear response, one can only speculate if the Aquaman actor is getting ready to leave his throne and instead become Lobo or potentially a different DCU character. If Lobo is truly the character he ends up playing and it's someone he is already passionate about portraying, it will be intriguing to see what he does with the bounty hunter in the DCU franchise. Hopefully, Momoa and DC Studios will clarify these reports about his future in the DCU sooner rather than later.
