MTV has posted an exclusive where Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie discusses the upcoming adaptation of DC Comics' Lobo.
Early this Fall, it was reported (by the infallible titans of entertainment journalism over at Variety) that Ritchie was attached to direct Lobo. And since the report came from Variety - not one of those crappy unreliable movie blogs :-P - everyone took it as fact.
Everyone except Guy Ritchie, apparently...
Here's what Ritchie had to say to MTV:
"Is it a matter of fact that I'm doing [Lobo]?... don't think it's a matter of fact. In fact, I can tell you it's not a matter of fact."
Hmmm... from that claim it would seem that DC/WB has been courting Ritchie for Lobo and perhaps a preliminary deal has even been put in place. However, from Ritchie's statement, it would seem that the dotted line has yet to be signed and that Variety may have jumped the gun in their initial report.
I know, I didn't think it was possible for a 'professional movie news source' to make errors, what with how much better they are than we lowly bloggers...
Anyway, take a look at this video of Ritchie talking to MTV about Lobo and decide for yourself where the truth lies:
So ok, Ritchie does admit to being super coy about the subject prior to the line of questioning, but all the same, it does seem genuine (to me) when he insists it's not a fact that he's attached to direct Lobo. And though I'm busting Variety's cojones, it's easy to see how the specifics of Ritchie's involvement could get be misconstrued. I'll also be the first to admit that I'm still holding a grudge from when Variety posted an anti-blog article back in March. The Outlaw does not forget...
As far as Lobo - did you have your heart already set on Guy Ritchie directing? Or do you perhaps see a small window of opportunity to hitch a different director to the project? Think Ritchie will ultimately sign on the dotted line?
No word on when Lobo would be in theaters.
