Here's how the Lizzie McGuire TV show and spin-off movie setup the Disney+ revival. Lizzie McGuire is set to return to the small screen on the brand new streaming service, Disney+, with Hilary Duff making her glorious return as the titular character over 15 years after the Disney Channel series ended.

After navigating junior high school with her best friends, Gordo and Miranda, Lizzie McGuire must have learned that there was more to life than being popular. The Lizzie McGuire revival will focus on the leading lady as she tackles life living in New York City as she nears turning 30-years-old. Lizzie is now an assistant to a famous interior-designer and she has a boyfriend of two years. Despite that, the heavier challenges that arise will force her back to Los Angeles.

Lizzie McGuire first debuted on the Disney Channel in January 2001 and ran for two seasons before coming to an end in February 2004. The series consisted of 65 episodes before it was cancelled due to Disney's controversial 65-episode max limit rule. The timeline of the original series is a little tricky since the episodes didn't air in the order that they were filmed. The Lizzie McGuire series finale, "Bye Bye Hillridge Junior High," actually aired in February 2003 even though a number of others premiered after that date. In the episode, Lizzie and her classmates prepared themselves to graduate junior high. Gordo wasn't sure what to write in Lizzie's yearbook but he eventually came up with something that revealed his true feeling for his best friend. By the end of the episode, Lizzie read what Gordo wrote and rewarded him with a kiss during the class picture. But that wasn't the end of Lizzie's arc with Disney.

How The Lizzie McGuire Movie Set Up The Character's Future

Hilary Duff

The Lizzie McGuire Movie from 2003 served as the canonical ending to the TV series. It debuted in theaters and brought back Lizzie and the majority of the main characters to follow the junior high graduates as they took a class trip to Rome. While on the trip, Lizzie fell into a ploy that led her to impersonate an Italian pop-star. As the impersonating scheme crumbled, Lizzie learned more about herself while finding a sense of confidence which clearly pushed the character to where she's at for the Disney+ series.

Lizzie was always stuck with the rampant worry of her inner self which was presented as an animated version of herself in the series. That animated alter ego will return for the revival but Lizzie will be dealing with a lot more than she did in junior high. Lizzie will still have her family as a major support system, confirmed by the return of Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas. Even with that support, it's safe to assume that Lizzie is still struggling to find her place in the world, just as she did in her early teens. There's rumors of appearances by Gordo and even Ethan Kraft but based on what Lizzie learned in the original series, finding that self-confidence is still the main goal. Just because the Lizzie McGuire revival will focus on an adult, it doesn't mean the lead character has mastered all of life's lessons.
