'90s babies, rejoice! Hilary Duff herself announced in August that Lizzie McGuire was coming back to our screens as a reboot. Seeing how excited and optimistic Duff was made fans scurry with questions.
Airing for two seasons from 2001 to 2004, we met 13-year-old Lizzie McGuire living her relatively "normal" life. She was your average teenager (like many of us) who had to deal with the ups and downs of middle school. She had adoring parents who tried to understand their teenage daughter and a pesky brother who always seemed to be on her nerves. We also met Lizzie's best friends, Miranda and Gordo. We followed Lizzie through her early teen years and saw her conquer bra shopping, crushes, her first kiss, heartbreaks, and just trying to graduate on time. Watching Lizzie McGuire gave many of us viewers peace in the sense that she was just like us.
Now, almost 20 years later, we're being given a reboot and fans can't contain their excitement. Here's everything we know so far about everybody's favorite Disney show.
IT'S LAUNCHING ON DISNEY+
Sorry, folks. You won't be able to watch the reboot of Lizzie McGuire on the Disney Channel, but you will be able to view it on Disney's new streaming service, Disney+.
The streaming service launches this November, but don't expect to see the reboot quite so soon. With the recent announcement of the show, there hasn't even been a trailer released yet. In fact, many speculate that Disney hasn't even started filming. At the moment, The Lizzie McGuire reboot's IMDb page says it'll be released in 2020.
WE'LL SEE LIZZIE IN HER 30S
When we met Lizzie, she was a 13-year-old girl trying to make her way out of middle school alive. When we left Lizzie, she was graduating middle school and touring through Europe on a class trip. Us fans didn't just watch her grow up, we grew up with her.
The reboot will continue this notion with Lizzie in her 30s. She much "wiser" than her 13-year-old self and seemingly has the "perfect life," according to Hilary Duff at Disney+’s D23 Expo event. She also told Good Morning America that Lizzie works in design (no surprise there) as an apprentice to a well-known interior designer.
AND SHE'S LIVING IN NEW YORK (BUT NOT FOR LONG)
Not only are we following Lizzie McGuire in her 30s, but also as she explores her new life in New York City. With a "dream job" in the Big Apple, Duff told Vulture that Lizzie is living in Brooklyn.
But will Lizzie be living in Brooklyn for the entirety of the show? Not quite. Without giving too much away, Duff explains that although Lizzie loves her life in New York, something urges her to get out of the city and move back to the West Coast. The real question is, will she be crashing with her mom and dad? We'll find out!
LIZZIE IS NOT WITH GORDO (CUE THE TEARS)
When we left Lizzie and Gordo, we saw them having an intimate moment when traveling through Italy. After being best friends for their entire lives, it was clear that Gordo always had a crush on Lizzie. But as we all know, Lizzie had her eyes on Ethan Kraft her entire life, so why would Gordo intervene? He also didn't want to disrupt the friendship they had — especially making it uncomfortable for Miranda. However, now that Lizzie is in her 30s, we find out that she and Gordo are not together in their adult life. Instead, Lizzie apparently has a beautiful boyfriend who works in the restaurant business.
Hilary Duff didn't seem too upset that Lizzie and Gordo didn't work out, though. She's stated that the tension between the two of them is what hooked us to the show to begin with.
THE FIRST EPISODE IS DESIGNED TO SUCK YOU IN
Fans of Lizzie McGuire aren't going to care if the episode sucks them in or not — they're going to watch the show regardless. We love Lizzie that much. However, Duff mentioned the ending of the first episode is going to leave viewers on a real cliffhanger. Whether that's with her personal or professional life is unknown, but we do know she doesn't stay in NYC for long, so perhaps that's why she moves back to the West Coast.
HER CARTOON CHARACTER WILL ALSO BE THERE!
One of the best parts about Lizzie McGuire was her animated version of herself. Many people had theories about this little avatar, of course, claiming that Lizzie had a personality disorder and that she spoke to her little cartoon version instead of other people. But let's be honest, the cartoon Lizzie is just a fun addition to get inside Lizzie's mind.
So, will cartoon Lizzie be back for the reboot? You bet! "We can't lose animated Lizzie! She's the heart of it and the sass of it all. And she's going to have the same outfit, which I'm obsessed with," Duff told Variety.
WHAT ABOUT FORMER CASTMATES?
Lizzie McGuire was as good as it was thanks to all the cast members on the show. We loved the love/hate relationship Lizzie had with her brother Matt. And her relationship with Miranda and Gordo is what inspired so many friendships. So, who's coming back from the original show? Well, the cat's not out of the bag on that one. Hilary Duff does assure fans that there will be a ton of "surprises" in store. Time will tell!
HILARY DUFF FORGETS HOW TO BE LIZZIE
It's been 18 years since Hilary Duff played Lizzie McGuire. While they may seem similar as people, they're in different parts of their lives currently.
Duff is now a mother of two, but Lizzie McGuire is still childless. "When I was 13 shooting the show, it was such a big part of me. I really just brought to the table myself and so I just have to tap into that and be really authentic," she told Entertainment Weekly.
THERE MAY BE SOME CELEBRITY CAMEOS
If you ask us, Hilary Duff and her castmates are all celebrities in our eyes. They got us through so much while we were watching the show. But if we're putting the main cast aside, there may be a few celebrity cameos coming our way.
After news broke that Lizzie McGuire was getting a reboot, singer Lizzo tweeted out that she wanted a cameo. Unexpectedly, Hilary Duff actually tweeted back saying "Ummmmm duh! Hired! Animated Lizzie might explode!" On that note, can we get an animated version of Lizzo, too?
'90S BABIES NEED LIZZIE IN THEIR LIVES RIGHT NOW
If there was ever a time to reconnect with the little girl or boy in us, it's now. Many of who watched the show as 13-year-olds are now in their late 20s/early 30s. We've matured and are somehow adults. Being able to become reconnect with an old show like Lizzie McGuire — but with a modern feel — makes many of us feel refreshed. Hilary Duff agrees and told ET Online that if there was a time that girls needed someone like Lizzie in their lives, it was now.
