Little Mermaid: What Terry Crews Could Look Like As King Triton

Digital artist BossLogic has shared some amazing fan art showing what Terry Crews might look like as King Triton in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The movie is one of Disney’s most-anticipated live-action remakes, and the biggest news about the production was last week’s official reveal that singer and actress Halle Bailey - a woman of color - had been cast as Ariel.

That sparked a depressingly predictable racist backlash from some of the close-minded Disney fans out there who took issue with the fact Ariel won’t be played by a white redhead. Most Disney fans, however, were pleased that a talented singer like Bailey had been hired, and would be able to do The Little Mermaid’s musical numbers justice. Since Bailey’s casting, Little Mermaid fans have surmised that Ariel’s dad King Triton will probably be played by a man of color, and are currently fantasy-casting Idris Elba and Terry Crews in the role. Crews certainly seems up for the job, judging by some fan art he recently shared showing him rather crudely photoshopped onto the cartoon body of King Triton from the 1989 animation.

Now, thanks to BossLogic’s new art, Little Mermaid fans have a more realistic idea of what Crews could look like as King Triton, complete with an impressive fishtail and white beard, gold gauntlets, and a bejeweled crown. The image is the latest in a series of Little Mermaid-themed artworks by Bosslogic that have also imagined what Bailey might look like as Ariel, and what Crews’ contender Idris Elba could look like as King Triton.

Both Crews and Elba look like they’d make for a formidable King Triton, but at the moment it’s all just wishful thinking, unfortunately. Whoever does end up nabbing the role of King Triton will be in good company. Alongside Bailey, a host of talented actors are currently in talks to join the Little Mermaid cast, including Melissa McCarthy, Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), and Room’s Jacob Tremblay.

With almost a year to go until The Little Mermaid even starts production, it could be quite a while before Disney fans learn who'll play King Triton. Whether Crews gets the role or not, whoever does will instantly have big expectations to meet from the dedicated Disney faithful. Luckily, The Little Mermaid is one of many live-action Disney remakes, so at least there’s the likes of The Lion King and Mulan for fans to look forward to in the meantime.
