The Little Drummer Girl Trailer: AMC Readies A Stylish ‘70s Spy Thriller

Alexander Skarsgård and Florence Pugh In The Little Drummer Girl

If AMC’s upcoming The Little Drummer Girl miniseries wasn’t already at the top of your fall TV watchlist, the new trailer will certainly put it there. An adaptation of John le Carré’s novel of the same name, the event series hails from acclaimed director Park Chan-wook and stars the likes of Michael Shannon, Alexander Skarsgård, and Florence Pugh, in a tale of international espionage and spycraft, with the added benefit of being a stylish period piece that, as far as what’s seen in the trailer, is going to be gorgeous to look at.

The series has been in the works for what feels like forever, with little details coming out here and there in advance of the event that will deliver all six episodes to viewers over the course of a three-night binge. So far, AMC and BBC have teased the look of Chan-wook’s vision with a number of still images that weren’t shy when it came to showing off the director’s willingness to use a brightly colored palette, which seemed in stark contrast to the color of the narrative and, certainly, to the usual look seen in similar spy thrillers.

But the trailer offers more than just another glimpse at the eye-catching allure of project; it offers an unsettling tone, one in which it seems no one is who they say they are. Take a look at the trailer and check out a synopsis and the official poster below:

The Little Drummer Girl Poster

“The Little Drummer Girl" weaves an explosive story of espionage and international intrigue; of love and betrayal. Brilliant young actress Charlie (Pugh) strikes up an acquaintance with an intriguing stranger while on vacation in Greece, but it rapidly becomes apparent that his intentions are far from romantic.  The man is Becker (Skarsgård), an Israeli intelligence officer, who entangles her in a complex and high stakes plot orchestrated by Spymaster, Kurtz (Shannon).”

It shouldn’t take much for fans of le Carré to get excited about his seemingly always relevant work making its way to television once again, but The Little Drummer Girl looks to be more than another adaptation. And from the what's on display in this trailer, the director of such films as Oldboy, The Handmaiden, and the under-appreciated Stoker is set to deliver a visual treat.
