An Instagram post by Argentine football star Lionel Messi after his team's World Cup victory on Sunday has become the most liked post on the platform ever. Messi's post took the title away from the so-called 'Instagram Egg,' which is a stock photo of an egg on a stark white background that was posted back in 2019, with the sole purpose of being the most-liked post on Instagram. The egg, which currently has more than 58 million likes, beat Kylie Jenner’s world record for the most-liked Instagram post.

As of Dec. 22, Messi's Instagram post celebrating his team's World Cup win has racked up more than 71 million likes, making it the most-liked post on the platform ever. The photos show Messi and the Argentina team celebrating their victory at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, and includes photos of the Argentina captain holding the World Cup trophy aloft and kissing the trophy at the presentation ceremony. In the caption accompanying the photo, Messi wrote "I dreamed it so many times, I wanted it so much... I can’t believe it" (translated from Spanish). He also thanked his family, supporters, and "all who believed in us."

Lionel Messi's Record-Breaking Instagram Post

The now-iconic photo that shows Lionel Messi holding aloft the World Cup trophy with a big smile on his face, was captured by Getty photographer Shaun Botterill. Talking to CNN about the photograph, Botterill said that it was taken when Messi was taking a lap of honor around the stadium while sitting on the shoulders of his friend and former teammate Sergio Aguero. Botterill said he knew it was a "pretty good picture" but lamented that the crop that Messi used for his world record Instagram post lacked the context and said that it wasn't his favorite version of the photo.

With 406 million followers, Messi has the world's third-most followed Instagram account behind Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 520 million followers, and Instagram's own account that has 580 million followers. Messi's posts typically have a high amount of engagement from adoring fans. Since the world record post, Messi has posted many other photographs with the World Cup trophy, including one that shows him sleeping with the trophy. Goes without saying, most of them also garnered millions of likes and comments congratulating him and his team.

For folks who don't follow football, Argentina won the World Cup on Sunday, beating France at the Lusail Stadium near Doha, Qatar. Messi scored twice in the final and received the Golden Ball award after being adjudged the best player of the tournament. This was Argentina's third World Cup victory, and the first since 1986 when the legendary Diego Maradona lifted the trophy as the team captain at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. There was no Instagram back then, but had the platform been there, one would assume that images of Maradona holding that trophy would also have garnered millions of likes.
