Disney releases a new clip for The Lion King, putting Timon and Pumbaa at the forefront. Voiced by Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen respectively, the meerkat and warthog duo is pivotal in helping Simba cope through the tragic death of his dad Mufasa. Given this, many are looking forward to how director Jon Favreau's retelling of the classic narrative handles the popular characters.
Eichner and Rogen join a star-studded voice cast for The Lion King. Donald Glover provides the voice of Simba, John Oliver is Zazu, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Scar, and John Kani voices Rafiki. Meanwhile, the legendary James Earl Jones reprises his role as Mufasa, while Beyonce Knowles-Carter will bring Nala to life. The contemporary remake of the beloved 1994 Disney classic will run 118 minutes - that's 29 minutes longer than the animated version. This backs up claims that it won't be a shot-for-shot remake. With that in mind, fans are excited to learn what the additional material will consist of.
Over the last few weeks, Disney has released a slew of marketing materials for The Lion King, including a series of TV spots and promotional clips that fans can expect to continue rolling out until the film hits theaters. The latest such clip comes from Rogen, who shared it on his official Twitter account. The short clip focuses on Timon and Pumbaa showing Simba the ropes of living the "Hakuna Matata" life. That includes eating bugs to ensure survival. The video also teases Simba's return to the Pride Lands, as he's accompanied by Nala, Zazu, Timon and Pumbaa. Watch the full clip below.
This latest The Lion King clip was released on the heels of a featurette that offered fans a peek at what went down during the creation of the movie. It included commentary from some of the involved cast members, as well as Favreau. It was intercut with actual footage from the movie, and one of the highlights of that footage was hearing a piece of Eichner, Rogen and Glover perform the positively infectious "Hakuna Matata." At the end, Glover, an award-winning musician also known as Childish Gambino, praised his co-stars, further exciting fans to hear the song. Of course, aside from their main musical number, the public can also expect the duo's hilarious prologue to Simba and Nala's "Can You Feel The Love Tonight."
Disney has made an enormous amount of money remaking their classics in live-action versions, but The Lion King may be their boldest move yet, considering the technicalities that needed to be ironed out to pull it off. The whole production is done via computer generated graphics that are photorealistic. That puts a lot of pressure on the voice cast to sell their characters well, and based on what's been released so far, it seems like they all did a great job.
