The Lion King releases a new song from its special album titled "Spirit," sung by Beyonce Knowles-Carter, who voices Nala in the upcoming film. Director Jon Favreau is back with his second Disney classic adaptation following The Jungle Book with the retelling of the beloved 1994 animated classic. The project boasts a star-studded cast of characters led by Donald Glover voicing Simba, John Oliver as Zazu, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Scar, and John Kani voices Rafiki. Meanwhile, the legendary James Earl Jones reprises his role as Mufasa.
With the original movie featuring such a memorable soundtrack, it's no secret that fans are excited to hear the music of Favreau's new take on the story and find out how fares with its predecessor. Hans Zimmer, who returns to score the contemporary adaptation, teamed up with Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice providing original songs such as "The Circle of Life," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and of course, the pleasantly contagious "Hakuna Matata." Aside from being fan-favorites, these songs are also critically-acclaimed, winning several accolades during that year. Considering this, many are looking forward to new songs from The Lion King's soundtrack, especially with musicians like Beyonce and Glover (who also goes by Childish Gambino) involved.
Now fans can finally hear one of the original songs from The Lion King as shared by Beyonce herself on her official YouTube channel. Titled "Spirit," the song will be part of a special curated album called "The Lion King: The Gift" which will feature a string of new tracks inspired by the movie. In a statement released to Yahoo!, the singer described the album as "sonic cinema...influenced by everything from R&B, pop, hip hop and Afro Beat.” She added:
“I wanted to put everyone on their own journey to link the storyline. Each song was written to reflect the film’s storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery, while listening to a new contemporary interpretation. It was important that the music was not only performed by the most interesting and talented artists but also produced by the best African producers. Authenticity and heart were important to me."
"Spirit" will appear in The Lion King, and according the same report, it will be during a pivotal scene focusing on Nala. This is fans' first details regarding additional material in the movie, and learning that this modern take opts to shine more light on the character is a welcome change for the public. Favreau's film is confirmed to run for 118 minutes - that's 29 minutes longer than the animated version, backing up the notion that it won't be a shot-for-shot remake. Since then, questions have started popping out regarding what new scenes it will offer.
A track list for The Lion King was made public late last month, and a notable "TBA" track from Beyonce caught the eye of many fans. Considering the singer's track record when it comes to her releases, many were understandably ecstatic about the notion of an original song from her for the movie. Not that a contribution from her for the soundtrack wasn't expected, but now that the song is finally here, the public is more excited than ever for the project which was generally praised based on early reactions from critics who already saw the movie.
