Lindsay Lohan will make her acting comeback in a new Netflix Christmas romcom. In the early 2000s, Lohan was one of the biggest young adult stars in Hollywood. After making her film debut in the beloved 1998 comedy The Parent Trap, Lohan went on to appear in several YA classics, from Freaky Friday to Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Her best and most well-known role is perhaps that of Cady Heron in Mean Girls. However, following personal struggles with the media and substance abuse, Lohan largely removed herself from the public eye; her last film credit was 2019's Among the Shadows.

As Netflix continues to expand its originals library, it's making a name for itself within the holiday movie sphere. In addition to traditional holiday fare like The Christmas Chronicles, the streamer has built up a robust number of romcoms in the same vein as those from Hallmark and Lifetime. 2020 alone saw the debut of projects like A California Christmas and The Princess Switch: Switched Again, the second installment in the Vanessa Hudgens-starring series. Now, Netflix can add another Christmas movie to its growing list.

Per Variety, Lohan will star in an upcoming Netflix holiday romantic comedy. The official logline reveals Lohan will play a spoiled, newly engaged heiress who gets amnesia after a skiing incident and "finds herself in the care of a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner and his precocious daughter in the days leading up to Christmas." No other cast members have been announced. The untitled project is expected to begin production in November, so it won't debut on the streaming service until next year at the earliest. Janeen Damien is on board as director and will write the script alongside Michael Damian, Jeff Bonnett and Ron Oliver. Netflix confirmed the news on social media with this post:

As many have noted on social media, the plot of this new Netflix film seems quite similar to Overboard, the 1987 comedy that starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (who, interestingly, recently led Netflix's The Christmas Chronicles 2). Netflix will have to offer a new spin on the story to avoid too many direct comparisons; hopefully, the holiday setting will add some new twists to the plot. Overboard similarities aside, the untitled project feels like a fitting addition to the streamer's holiday romcom canon.

Lohan's involvement is particularly exciting for fans of her previous work. The actress has had a rough go of it in recent years, but she's indicated she is interested in getting back into movies. Seeing as so many of Lohan's past projects are still regularly rewatched to this day, it'll be interesting to see how this Netflix collaboration stacks up with the rest of her filmography.
