A Grand Jury Prize winner at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the upcoming romantic drama Like Crazy was directed by indie filmmaker Drake Doremus, who co-wrote the film with Ben York Jones.
A trailer has been released for the low-budget production, which boasts a few familiar faces as members of its cast – and promises to offer a serious and broody romance that’s more along the lines of fellow Sundance flick Blue Valentine than your average cutesy Hollywood rom-com or love story.
Like Crazy stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, next month’s Fright Night remake) and Felicity Jones (The Tempest) as Jacob and Anna, a pair of college students – one American, one British – who meet and begin a serious relationship with one another. However, disaster strikes unexpectedly when Anna accidentally violates the terms of her visa and is forced to leave the U.S. Thus begins the couple’s attempts to remain together, despite the intimidating difference in geography.
Costarring in the film are the likes of Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Charlie Bewley (the Twilight franchise), and Oliver Muirhead (The Social Network). The majority of the film, however, revolves around Yelchin and Jones’ characters.

Yelchin and Jones look to have nice chemistry as a screen couple, which is naturally imperative in order for a sweet yet melancholic romantic story like… Like Crazy to work – and not just feel overly sappy or listless. The trailer was very clearly designed to play the film up as being a tear-jerker, between the emotional tone shifting about like a roller coaster and the use of Ingrid Michaelson’s mournful take on “Can’t Help Falling In Love.” All the same, the raw footage seems sufficiently moving, on its own, painting the film as an endearing portrait of young love (and early heartbreak).
