Popular tabletop streaming group Critical Role will be partnering with Square Enix for the upcoming game Life is Strange: True Colors by making one of the main characters, Steph Gingrich, part of the Critical Role fanbase. This give new context to a recent gameplay trailer where she is shown to be playing a D&D-style tabletop game in the Wavelengths DLC. Steph will be a playable character as part of the DLC, where she will be reprising her role from Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

True Colors is slated to be the third official entry in the story-focused magical realism Life is Strange franchise. The series is focused mainly on slower, dialog-based gameplay designed to heighten the emotional and often hard-hitting narrative of each game. While the games all take place in the same universe, each release is a standalone story, which has given the creators the opportunity to keep things fresh. In True Colors, players will get the chance to explore scenic Haven Springs, Colorado as Alex Chen, a young adult with supernatural empathic powers, and later as disk jockey Steph Gingrich in the Wavelengths DLC. Alex's powers were showcased in a recent gameplay trailer for Life is Strange: True Colors.

A little more light was shed on Steph's position in the game via a special announcement from the Life is Strange Twitter account. In the short video, Critical Role Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer lets viewers know that Steph Gingrich will be a canonical Critter (a nickname given to Critical Role fans). He goes on to explain that the record store that Steph manages will be accented with a selection of Critical Role decor and merchandise. Players can also use a fictional dating app in the Wavelengths DLC, which will feature mock-up profiles of various Critical Role members.

In August, the developers set a September 30th release date for Wavelengths, which will likely line up with when many players are wrapping up Alex Chen's story following the main game's release on the 10th. This additional context and characterization for Steph will surely excite fans who want to spend more time with another charismatic, relatable lead. Moreover, the decision by Square Enix and developer Deck Nine to connect with Critical Role will likely broaden the scope and appeal of the game, possibly swaying fans of Critical Role to check out the series.

While this partnership was probably made in part for cross-promotional purposes, it will certainly help to make the Life is Strange world more realistic and relatable. The games are well-known for their pop-culture references and focus on modern lifestyles, so a tabletop game streaming group is certainly a good match. However the base game and DLC turn out, Critical Role fans will surely get a kick out of this cute connection.
