LG has announced new earbuds under its TONE Free line, and they boast some interesting features not available on its other earbuds. LG made its foray into the earbuds market in 2019 with the LG TONE+ Free earbuds. However, to stand out from the plethora of earbuds, it had to incorporate some exciting features into its products.

Among them is the UVnano charging case with a powerful UV LED that it claims can kill up to 99.9 percent of bacteria. It also fits its earbuds with medical-grade silicone ear gels that prevent irritation. In addition, some LG earbuds can work with devices without Bluetooth connectivity thanks to a technology called Plug & Wireless.

LG's new TONE Free earbuds for 2022 come in four models: TONE Free T90, TONE Free T60, TONE Free Fit TF7 and the TONE Free Fit TF8. All four feature Meridian Sound, medical-grade silicone ear gels, LG's signature UVnano charging case, which sterilizes the earbuds using UV light, and support for fast charging. However, they are targeted at different demographics.

LG's Earbuds Can Sterilize Themselves

LG TONE Free T90

The T90 is the most premium model and shows in its features. According to LG, the earbuds, which have 11mm dynamic, "are the world's first wireless earbuds to have support for Dolby Atmos Head Tracking technology across all content and devices." It also claims they are the first earbuds to feature an audio visualizer made by Dolby that's designed explicitly for earbuds. The audio visualizer is said to expand spatial dimensionality. In addition, the earbuds have support for Snapdragon Sound; Active Noise Cancellation with a Real-Time ANC Optimizer that adjusts ANC based on the actual position of the earbuds in the user's ears; and are rated IPX4 for water resistance.

They also have a Voice Pickup Unit (VPU) that detects voices when having a conversation. Connecting the earbuds to a device should be pretty easy as there is support for Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair. LG's new earbuds also support Bluetooth Multipoint and Audio Switching on supported LG devices. The T90's battery life is nine hours (20 hours with the charging case) with ANC turned off, and the charging case supports wired charging via a USB-C port and wireless charging. The T60 has a similar design to the T90 but doesn't have Dolby Head Tracking, Real-Time ANC Optimizer, a VPU, and loses out on wireless charging. The LG TONE Free T90 is priced at $229. LG has yet to reveal the TONE Free T60, but it should cost less since it is missing some features. The TONE Free Fit TF7 and TF8 are designed for working out, which shows in their design. Unlike the T90 and T60, these two pairs have wings which LG has dubbed SwivelGrip, and keep the earbuds in place during intense workouts. Furthermore, the TF7 and TF8 have a higher IP67 dust and water resistance rating due to what they are designed for. Both earbuds have a battery life of up to 10 hours with ANC turned off, and it goes up to 30 hours in total with the charging case.

A distinct difference between the TF8 and the TF7 is the former's support for LG's Plug & Wireless Charging, which allows owners to use the earbuds with devices that don't have Bluetooth support. All they have to do is plug the case of the earbuds into the AUX port of the device using a USB-C to 3.5mm cable, and their earbuds will work wirelessly. This feature is also available on the T90. The TONE Free Fit TF8 is priced at $199, but the price of the TF7 is yet to be revealed. Nevertheless, LG says all four earbuds will be available worldwide by the end of August.
