Appliances are becoming smarter with eye-catching features, but LG's MoodUp refrigerator — showcased at CES 2023 — might be the most bespoke of them all. Just when users thought the tech industry couldn't possibly make home appliances any more interesting, appliance-makers developed a ton of new options to wow customers. Including everything from smart displays to Bluetooth speakers, these manufacturers are aiming to position a smart fridge as the centerpiece of a person's kitchen. That comes with a good amount of customizability, but LG is taking that aspect a step further with its MoodUP fridge.

The fridge, which features LED color panels on each door, first caught eyes at the IFA 2022 trade show, but attendees got a fresh look at the MoodUp refrigerator at CES 2023. LG released an accompanying YouTube video showcasing the fridge's features and personality. While the MoodUp fridge includes the same high-quality refrigeration technologies as other LG offerings, this option is highlighted by its malleability and customizability. Most fridges have a generic style and design, and will remain in a home for years, but the MoodUp fridge can be adjusted to a user's preferences in real time.

MoodUP Fridges Change Color In Seconds

Though having color-changing LEDs on a refrigerator might not seem like the most important feature to have in an appliance, it makes sense in terms of both form and function. Aesthetically, the fridge becomes customizable based a person's current taste, providing unprecedented visual flexibility in a home appliance. It could be especially useful for different seasons and during the holidays — a MoodUP fridge might be set to pale colors during the summer months but switched to red and green during the holiday season.

Beyond its physical attributes, the LG MoodUP fridge packs a few functional features that might make a difference in day-to-day use. Quickly knocking on one of the door panels will cause it to become transparent, giving owners a look at what is stored inside. If a door is left open for too long, the panel will blink, drawing attention to the open door before perishables are lost. With motion sensors inside, the MoodUP fridge even knows when people are nearby, and can blink at the person to say hello.

In an effort to make the fridge an entertainment centerpiece, the MoodUP fridge has a built-in Bluetooth speaker that can play music and other media. The lighting can be controlled through the LG ThinQ app, where users can choose from 22 colors for the upper door panel and 19 colors for the lower door panel. It's unclear when or if LG's MoodUp fridge will be available to consumers, but it remains a one-of-a-kind home appliance.
