As party games grow more popular thanks to a premium on indoors entertainment, the appeal of karaoke-style games - especially those with multiplayer - grows. Thankfully, Voxler has combined with publisher Koch Media to release Let’s Sing 2021 just a few weeks after the two companies launched Let’s Sing Queenand it's another stellar effort in the admittedly niche genre that should please those looking to flex their vocal cords.

The basic premise of Let’s Sing 2021 should be familiar to anyone who has played a karaoke game or seen Netflix’s latest reality show Sing On. Players simply have to sing along to the lyrics shown on screen while trying to hit the correct notes. These are represented by bars that change according to the tone of the original singer. Building up the score is a matter of hitting these notes and sustaining them for the right amount of time.

Like its predecessors, Let’s Sing 2021 has a wide variety of different game modes. These range from the Classic mode to the likes of Feat and Mixtape, which involve singing a duet or mashing together several songs for a unique setlist respectively. There’s also the Let’s Party mode that pits two teams against each other in a series of interesting challenges. Whether players want to just belt out their favorite songs or try to challenge friends in wacky mini-games, there is something for everyone.

One new addition is Legends. This acts as a sort of career mode where the aim is to square off against AI-controlled avatars in a series of singing challenges. Each round culminates in what feels like a boss battle, adding some drama and jeopardy to a genre that typically doesn’t have any. While it might not be something that everyone enjoys, Legends adds a new layer to Let’s Sing 2021 that is very welcome.

As is the case with other Let’s Sing games, this latest installment does not require players to have proper USB microphones. The series has always tried to be as accessible as possible and that sentiment carries on in Let’s Sing 2021. What that means is that players can actually sing along to the tracks using a smartphone or even a headset mic. Users simply have to download the Let’s Sing app for Android or iOS and then sync it up by entering a code. Games such as the Jackbox Party Pack have already shown that allowing smartphones to be used instead of a controller can widen the appeal and it definitely makes getting four people into a single match of Let’s Sing 2021 far easier than it would otherwise have been.

When it comes to the presentation, Let’s Sing 2021 has refined the visual style from previous games. The menus are sleek, with a simple but effective layout that doesn’t add any extra effort to the process of getting to the desired game mode or setting. The same is also true of the user interface. It’s clear the developers went for an approach that is functional yet doesn’t stop everything from looking stylish. This even extends to the player avatars, which fit well with the aesthetic even though they are not incredibly detailed.

Ultimately, a game like this lives or dies according to how good the library of songs is. Let’s Sing 2021 includes 30 tracks, ranging from old-time classics to recent chart-toppers. Some of the new songs include hits from Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi, and Lizzo. However, there’s also “I Just Can‘t Wait to Be King” from The Lion King and “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal. Combined with an established set of DLC packs there is definitely something for practically every type of music lover to enjoy.

Let’s Sing already did a pretty good job of setting itself apart from other singing games. Rather than limiting it to simply being a karaoke simulator, the developer has introduced a series of interesting mechanics and game modes to mix things up. Let’s Sing 2021 goes one step further with the challenging Legends mode, giving players a real reason to play by themselves. Of course, the game remains most fun when played with a group of friends, each competing to unleash their inner superstar, and that makes it a valuable addition to any party roster.
