Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio has been ordered by federal investigators to return an Oscar in his possession - though not the one you're thinking of. Back in 2016, DiCaprio won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in The Revenant, putting an end to all the jokes and memes about him not getting the golden statue.

Prior to his long-awaited win, DiCaprio had been nominated for an Academy Award five times; one for Best Supporting Actor in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, three for Best Actor, and one as producer when The Wolf of Wall Street was nominated for Best Picture. And, of course, there’s all the times he was overlooked. Turns out that DiCaprio has another Oscar in his possession and now has to hand it over - but that’s a statue he did not win for any performance.

Said Oscar is that of Marlon Brando for his role in the 1954 film On the Waterfront. According to The New York Times (via MSN), DiCaprio got the statue as a gift from Malaysian financier Jho Low, who is now being accused of committing fraud against an investment fund. DiCaprio has handed over the Oscar as well as other gifts from Low, including a painting by Pablo Picasso and a collage by Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Brando’s Oscar disappeared from his Hollywood home and was later bought by Low for $600,000 from a film memorabilia dealer. Some film fans will agree with the price, others will consider it was too much or maybe too little, but here’s where the story takes a twist: according to a spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, they have the right to buy the statue back from the government for $1. That is, of course, once the investigation is over - and it could be a while until that happens.

DiCaprio was not the only celebrity that was given these type of gifts by Low. Per The New York Times, Low bought the clear-acrylic grand piano from Crystal Music Company and gave it to Miranda Kerr. Of course, Kerr will have to give it up, but due to some complications with taking it out of her house, it will have to stay (for a while, at least). Meanwhile, Low is a fugitive and believed to be hiding in China.

Fans of DiCaprio have nothing to worry about as the jokes and memes about the Oscar won’t come back and he is not in trouble (as in, he is not involved in the fraud). Although it’s not uncommon for financiers and producers to give expensive gifts to celebrities, it wouldn’t hurt to question it from time to time, especially gifts that disappeared and were casually auctioned or extravagant pieces like a crystal piano.
