There's been a heap of fascinating Android gaming phones in recent years, and thanks to new pictures of the upcoming Legion Phone 2 Pro from Lenovo, it looks like the company is creating one of the most interesting ones yet. Gaming phones do all of the same things that regular smartphones do, but they come with special features/design tweaks that help them be more effective while gaming.

One of the most recent examples of this is the Asus ROG Phone 5. The ROG Phone 5 can make phone calls, use Twitter, and take photos like any other device, but it also has a lot of features to help with gaming — including reprogrammable buttons for better game controls, an ultra-smooth 144Hz display refresh rate, and a clip-on accessory that helps keep the phone cool during particularly tense matches. Asus also went all-out with the ROG Phone 5's design, including a secondary display on the back. Unconventional design is often one of the highlights of any gaming phone, and that's something Lenovo is well, well aware of.

Images of the upcoming Lenovo Legion Phone 2 Pro were recently shared by AnTuTu on Chinese social network Weibo, and taking a look at the device, it's safe to say that it's pretty unique. The front of the Legion 2 Pro is reminiscent of any other modern phone, but the back is where that changes. The middle area houses the Legion 2 Pro's rear cameras, a cooling fan, and the Legion logo. On either side of that are two squares of stark white, and when combined with the horizontal placement of the Legion branding, it really does make the Legion 2 Pro look like a small gaming console more than a smartphone.

Crazy Smartphone Designs Are Never A Bad Thing

Outside of the horizontal orientation of the Legion 2 Pro's design, it's also noteworthy that the back of the phone has that cooling fan built right into it. That should allow the Legion 2 Pro to remain cool and collected even after hours of continuous use, which is especially important when playing a lot of demanding games. It remains to be seen how the fan holds up after months of regular use and dust/dirt falling into it, but purely from a creativity perspective, it's pretty fascinating to see something like this.

While some people might look at these pictures of the Legion 2 Pro and argue that it's too unusual, there's another argument to be made that there's nothing at all wrong with what Lenovo's doing here. One of the biggest complaints with smartphones right now is that they're all too similar and all do the same thing, but with the Legion 2 Pro, Lenovo seems to have found a way to ensure it easily sticks out from everything else on the market. Whether that results in more sales of the phone or just more people talking about it, that's a win for Lenovo.
