Rather than a Zelda-like Hearts system, characters now have health bars - and enemies have them, too. This is a nice improvement from the typical way fighting enemies worked - players would attack them, and after so many hits, they'd burst into LEGO bricks. Now, there's a quantifiable amount of health on display, so players will know when they've got their foes nearly defeated.

The over-the-shoulder shooting mechanics that were in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens are back, and lightsaber fights look as exciting as ever. Of course, lightsaber duels have always been a massive draw for most Star Wars video games, and the Jedi and Sith featured in the new Skywalker Saga trailer look equally fearsome and powerful.
LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga Trailer - New Characters
The trailer revealed new Star Wars characters for Skywalker Saga, all thanks to showing off an in-game menu that serves as a character selection screen. The game boasts over 300 playable characters, and nearly half of these have been confirmed thanks to previous footage and screenshots. Play-styles of some characters - like Jabba the Hutt slinking across the sand and Mace Windu swinging his purple lightsaber - are on full display here. However, some new characters - like The Rise of Skywalker's Carib Diss - can be glimpsed from the menu.
The new LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga trailer also teases multiple Knights of Ren (and it's certainly possible all of them will be playable) as well as showing additional footage of newer characters like Babu Frik. Of course, no Star Wars game is complete without its vehicles, and LEGO Skywalker Saga looks to have plenty to offer. Both Luke Skywalker's X-Wing and Poe Dameron's are featured in the trailer, and the iconic Millennium Falcon is shown engaging with a Star Destroyer. Star Wars games have a long history with space combat sims, like TIE Fighter and the more-recent Squadrons, so it's great to see some of this preserved in LEGO form.
The planets in LEGO Skywalker Saga have seemingly been all confirmed now thanks to the new Gameplay Overview trailer. In a previous preview, some parts of the in-game map were hidden. However, the latest reveal shows additional planets like Exegol from Episode 9. In-game, players will be able to use the Holoprojector to open up the map and travel to available planets throughout the galaxy.
Based on what's shown in the latest trailer, space traversal isn't entirely safe. As players travel the galaxy, they may become engaged in dogfights with Imperials or other villains. This should add a bit of open-world mechanics seen in LEGO's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit games, since it looks like players can travel fairly freely in LEGO Skywalker Saga, barring any story-related constraints.

Characters can come equipped with multiple weapons and items, allowing them to unlock more secrets, find rare items, and get to hard-to-reach places. Collectibles are a large part of LEGO video games, and Skywalker Saga will be no different. Kyber Crystals can be collected to unlock new features and upgrades.
The abilities system is one of the more exciting new features for LEGO Skywalker Saga. With classes like Scoundrel, Jedi, Dark Side, and Astromech Droid showcased - each with their own set of abilities to upgrade - it looks as if Skywalker Saga will have more customizability options than any LEGO game before it.
