The release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is nearly here, but some players are already frustrated following confirmation that the game won't have character customization. The LEGO video game series is typically known for recreating the ethos of the brick toys they're based on, offering the feeling of a custom experience that's packed with fun.

From AAA sprawling RPGs to self-contained indie games, character customization is a feature seen throughout gaming, and has been a feature included in LEGO Star Wars games for many years. Through the toolset, users were able to create hybrid characters based on familiar Star Wars faces, giving them the opportunity to advance through Star Wars stories as a wholly unique character. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has placed an emphasis on its characters since it was first revealed, with many looking forward to designing a hero from parts seen throughout the full nine-movie Star Wars saga the game will address.

Unfortunately for those awaiting the feature, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga developer TT Games took to Twitter to confirm the game won't have character customization (via BrickFanatics). As one user's video of a 2019 E3 interview which seemingly announced character customization gained traction, TT Games stepped in and cleared confusion, revealing that while players shouldn't be short on playable characters, they won't be able to customize their own. TT Games stated:

"This interview was from 2019, and sometimes features change throughout development. We can confirm that LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga doesn’t have character customisation, but we do have 300+ characters for you to choose from."

As perhaps expected, the news has been met with disappointment from those awaiting the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The title's trailers and gameplay reveals have so far highlighted an impressively large game, packed with dynamic environments, flyable ships, and - of course - hundreds of characters, but not being able to play as a unique hero means players will get a less immersive experience. LEGO: Skywalker Saga's roster of playable characters has already leaked, and while custom minifigs are off the table, there's still lots of options for pre-built Jedi, Sith, and more.

It's very possible that additional features like character customization could come to LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in the future, by way of a game update. While any such post-launch content containing missing features is far from confirmed, DLC for the game has already been revealed, and will add a host of additional characters from Star Wars properties, including The Mandalorian, Rogue One, and The Bad Batch. TT Games is seemingly prepared to make its game the definitive Star Wars game experience, so it's hoped character customization could come in the future.
