The LEGO Movie 3 gets an encouraging production update from producer Dan Lin. Lin has been one of the main producers for The LEGO Movie franchise. He has served as a producer for The LEGO Movie, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, and The LEGO Batman Movie. The main LEGO movie series had its last film in 2019 with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, which stars Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Alison Brie, Tiffany Haddish, Nick Offerman, Maya Rudolph, and Stephanie Beatriz, among other stars.

Both The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Movie 2 were immensely successful with both critics and fans, leading many to push for a third installment of the main franchise. From Haddish’s musical, shapeshifting, “not evil,” Queen, to a Mad Max: Fury Road reference, to the existential self-parody “Everything’s Not Awesome” (featuring hilarious lines like “Whoa, I think I finally get Radiohead), The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part especially proved the franchise's ability to appeal to viewers on multiple levels. The fast-paced series still has its appeal to children looking for cute characters and funny moments, but operates on enough of a meta and pop cultural-referential level to appeal to adult generations as well. With all of these perks, it is likely that a LEGO Movie 3 would be incredibly successful if made.

It seems fans might get what they are waiting for, according to Lin. While on the Hot Seat podcast, Lin claims that The LEGO Movie 3 is still actively in development. Lin discussed the plans for The LEGO Movie 3, and how the creative team has “reinvented it in a cool way.” Check out the full quote from Lin below:

“We know we have to switch it up & take to a different art form that’s still true to LEGO, we should have some announcements soon… I think we’ve reinvented it in a cool way.”

Creating a film that's "still true to LEGO" but will "switch it up" will allow The LEGO Movie franchise to keep delivering the high-quality groundwork they have been laying. Though The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part do have characters and comedic stylings in common, the two films are still incredibly different. For example, the second film delves into much more existential themes than the first did. The LEGO Batman Movie also offered another variation for the franchise, relying heavily on references and jokes to all other existing Batman content. With the LEGO Movie film rights going to Universal, it'll be interesting to see how the filmmakers approach the next installment.

Given what the franchise has already done with these films, it seems well within The LEGO Movie creative team’s capability to mix it up even further for The LEGO Movie 3. While little else is known about the plot of characters of The LEGO Movie 3, it is likely to still play with live-action and animated sequences like The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (and to a lesser extent the first film) did. The LEGO Movie 3 does not yet have a release date.
