Corporate synergy has been the name of the game for LEGO in recent years. Integrating brands across different mediums, such as toys, video games, and even theatrical films has been key to growing the company beyond just a traditional building-block set creator, into something much bigger.
Video games specifically have been responsible for a huge portion of LEGO's growth. Over 5o LEGO video games have been released, usually coinciding with an ongoing theme in the company's toy line. However, most of their games have followed the same general format; that is, until now.
Later this year, LEGO will be making the jump to the "toy to life" format with LEGO Dimensions. Taking inspiration from Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Nintendo's amiibo, LEGO Dimensions will use actual toy figures that can also be played digitally in the game. Because of that, a number of different brands LEGO has collaborated with in the past will be playable in the game, including (but not limited to) Back to the Future, Doctor Who, The Simpsons and DC Comics.
Fans will be able to learn more of what's ahead in the future of Doctor Who at International Comic-Con later this week. In the meantime, they can now get a look at the Doctor's presence in LEGO Dimensions, which can be seen in the trailer above.
Doctor Who, featured in the trailer above, will be getting its own level pack with the 12th Doctor, a Tardis and K9 all available to purchase. Once fans buy the pack, they will be able to play the Doctor Who portion of the game, which based off of the trailer above looks like a blast. Gamers will be able to play as all twelve doctors in the game, while it has also been confirmed that Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez will be voicing their characters from the series as well.
Gamers will be able to play as the Doctor in Dimensions, where they will have the opportunity to explore several elements from the series. Not only that, but LEGO has also found an ingenious way of crossing the franchises over in a method that not only works, but is fresh and exciting. It's not often that Doctor Who, Batman, Gandalf, Wyldstyle and Doc Brown are all featured in the same game together.
With several level packs still to be announced, there is also the opportunity for LEGO to expand the game outside of the brands available on its release date. That's not saying there are not already plenty of packs to begin with. Outside of the aforementioned properties available in LEGO Dimensions, there also will be packs for Scooby-Doo, The Lego Movie, The Lord of the Rings and more. Considering the sheer amount of figures that will be playable in the game, gamers will likely be busy for many weeks following the game's launch in September.
LEGO Dimensions is set for release on September 27, 2015 for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, XBox 360, XBox One and Wii U. The Doctor Who level pack does not have a release date as of yet.
