The CW launched its DC Comics universe with the crime drama Arrow in 2012, then expanded to include the more science fiction-leaning The Flash in 2014. This year, both shows have been working to set up the third spinoff within the CW's shared DC universe, Legends of Tomorrow, by introducing the ancient reincarnated characters Carter Hall a.k.a. Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) and Kendra Saunders a.k.a. Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée), as well as their immortal enemy Vandal Savage (Casper Crump).
While Arrow borrows its tone from crime dramas - more recently incorporating mysticism - and The Flash from sci-fi, Legends of Tomorrow will be a time travel series, following the characters as they travel through time with Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) in order to defeat Vandal Savage. Now, a new character has been announced for this time travel adventure who will have ties to Sara Lance a.k.a. White Canary (Caity Lotz).
EW is reporting Ali Liebert (Bomb Girls, Fringe) has been cast as Lindsay Carlisle, "a soft-spoken, intelligent lady who is the ideal picture of 1950s womanhood," for an upcoming episode of Legends of Tomorrow. Lindsay will be a "young closeted nurse" harboring the "dark secret" of her true sexuality as a lesbian amidst the strict morals of the 1950s - until she meets Sara Lance, who is "out of place, both in time and place, visiting 1958 ‘Pleasantville, America’" in the episode.
Sara has previously been in relationships with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) on Arrow. But since she was reincarnated in the Lazarus Pit, "she’s been consumed by a quest for bloodshed and incapable of having romantic feelings for anyone," explained Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Phil Klemmer. Klemmer went on to talk about the relationship between Sara and Lindsay:
“When Sara first meets Lindsay Carlisle, she finds herself in the position of caring about someone for the first time in forever — an idea she’s not entirely sure she’s ready for. It’s easy for our cold hearted assassin to kill a hundred people, but does she have the ability to care about one?”
As fans of Arrow will remember, the relationship between Sara and Nyssa had been rekindled prior to Sara's death, with Nyssa then searching to avenge the murder of her beloved. But since Sara's return to the living, Nyssa has largely been out of the picture, presumably because she opposed the resurrection in the first place. This leaves Sara open to finding a new love and a new relationship amid the time-travelling adventures on Legends of Tomorrow.
Of course, while many fans may be eager to see this new relationship between Sara and Lindsay unfold, it likely won't be a huge storyline over the course of Legends of Tomorrow season 1. It has so far been unconfirmed how many episodes Liebert will appear in on the series, and the storyline of Sara meeting Lindsay seems to only occur in one episode. It remains to be seen if Lindsay will become a more regular fixture on Legends of Tomorrow as a love interest of Sara.
But before Lindsay Carlisle makes her debut on Legends of Tomorrow, the legends themselves will be assembled in the pilot episode of the series, airing late in January. To gear up for the premiere of the pilot, Spoiler TV has released a batch of stills from the episode. Take a look at a few shots of the ragtag group of heroes and villains that make up the Legends team:
Arrow and The Flash spent a good deal of their seasons this year making sure the characters that would go on to appear in Legends of Tomorrow were fully able to show up. In the case of Sara that meant resurrecting her from the dead, while Leonard Snart a.k.a. Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) needed to be broken out of prison. Still, it may all be worth it once Rip Hunter assembles his team and takes off on the time-travelling journey to defeat Vandal Savage in Legends of Tomorrow.
The Flash will return on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, while Arrow will return on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 and Legends of Tomorrow will see its series premiere on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
