Here's what to expect from DC's Legends of Tomorrow season 5. The CW's most wonderfully weird superhero series spent season 4 setting up Heyworld, a theme park full of magical creatures, while also giving the Legends a chance to stop the demon Neron from stealing thousands of human souls and claiming the throne of Hell.

In Legends of Tomorrow season 4, the heroes shed their image as losers and became a valued asset of the Time Bureau, which is headed up by Sara Lance's girlfriend Ava Sharpe. The Legends' mission was to round up magical fugitives hiding throughout the timeline but they soon realized Nate Heywood's father Hank was in league with Neron, who had a nefarious plan in mind of the monsters. In addition to John Constantine becoming a Legend, a shapeshifter named Charlie and a werewolf named Mona Wu also joined the team, Nate and a reformed Nora Darhk began working for the Time Bureau, and the heroes encountered historical figures like Jane Austen and President Richard Nixon.

With the Legends definitely set to continue their time-tossed antics next season, here's what we know so far about Legends of Tomorrow season 5:

Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Premieres Midseason 2020

Legends of Tomorrow was renewed for season 5 in January 2019, along with the rest of the DC TV slate. At The CW upfronts in May, the network announced Legends of Tomorrow would return during the 2020 midseason. Legends of Tomorrow season 4 was paired with Arrow on Monday nights, but in fall 2019, Arrow season 8, which is its final season, will move to Tuesdays and team up with The Flash season 6.

While Legends of Tomorrow's fans will have to wait longer for the return of the time-traveling misfits, the good news is that the series returning in midseason will likely mean an uninterrupted run of episodes. This would spare fans the frustration of how Legends of Tomorrow season 4 premiered in fall 2018 but then took a 4 month break after its midseason finale in December before returning in April to air the back half of season 4.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Story Details

Legends of Tomorrow, John Constantine Phoenix

In Legends of Tomorrow season 4, the series was turned on its ear by adding John Constantine to the cast and focusing on chasing magical and mythological fugitives throughout history. The series has definitely found its niche as the goofy outliers of the Arrowverse but the Legends of Tomorrow season 4 finale "Hey World!" signaled a change of direction again in season 5 when Astra released the souls of evil historical figures like Genghis Khan, Joseph Stalin, and Mary Tudor from Hell.

The core cast, led by Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, and Dominic Purcell, are all expected to return for Legends of Tomorrow season 5  and that does include Tala Ashe, although Zari Tomaz has been erased from the team as a result of "Hey World!".  Creatively, Legends of Tomorrow struck gold by embracing its weirdness, turning it into the best show in the Arrowverse (at least according to its fans) and they are poised to maintain their winning formula.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 May Include Crisis On Infinite Earths

Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths Crossover

Legends of Tomorrow will also be part of the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover in fall 2019, which was confirmed by the Monitor making a cameo in "Hey World!". How this will work hasn't been revealed yet since Legends of Tomorrow season 5 will premiere in midseason 2020. However, at The CW upfronts, the network announced the Crisis crossover would air in "5 parts over 2 quarters".

With the four other Arrowverse series - Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Batwoman - all anchoring an hour of the Crisis, it could mean there will be a special Crisis episode of Legends of Tomorrow in fall 2019 or it could mean Crisis could constitute the midseason finales of three shows (and the series finale of Arrow) and then pick up as the midseason premieres of two other series, including DC's Legends of Tomorrow. We'll know the details for sure as we get closer to the event.
