Warning: SPOILERS for DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 5, Episode 9.

One of DC's Legends of Tomorrow shockingly died in season 5, episode 9: Behrad Tarazi (Shayan Sobhian) was murdered by the Greek goddess Atropos (Joanna Vanderham) while protecting his older sister Zari (Tala Ashe). Behrad's sacrifice came at the end of "Zari, Not Zari", which saw the heroes on the run from Atropos, the sister of Charlie AKA Clotho (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), as they sought after one of the pieces of the mythical Loom of Fate.

Behrad is a new addition to Legends of Tomorrow season 5 but, thanks to the time-traveling misfits mucking up their own timeline, Behrad got retconned to be a part of the team since season 3, when Zari originally joined. In the Legends of Tomorrow season 4 finale, "Heyworld", the Legends' defeat of the demon Neron ended up deleting Zari's history with the team, instantly replacing her with her younger brother Behrad, who was dead in the original timeline. Behrad was now the wielder of the Air Totem and supplanted Zari's history with the Legends; Zari herself never joined the Waverider crew and instead became a fabulously popular social media celebrity and influencer. None of the Legends realized the switcheroo until Zari came aboard the time ship and began experiencing echoes of her previous life, such as a desire to eat donuts and an attraction to Nate Heywood (Nick Zano), who the original Zari fell in love with before she was erased. For Behrad's part, he took over Zari's role as the team's technical wizard and video game master (he also liked to get high, unlike his sister).

In "Zari, Not Zari", Behrad stayed behind on the Waverider to help his big sister figure out her visions and why she could also control the Air Totem he wears on his wrist. Behrad's solution was to send Zari on a Totem Quest but, while his sister entered their mystical amulet and met the original incarnation of Zari, Atropos entered the Waverider looking for the ring of the Loom of Fate the Legends had acquired. Behrad tried to wake Zari from her slumber and came face-to-face with Atropos, who took the ring. Foolishly, Behrad tried to attack the Greek god and she murdered him. When Zari came to, she found out her little brother died protecting her. And, tragically, it seems Behrad is doomed in every timeline.

Behrad smiles at his team on Legends of Tomorrow

Behrad's death is a real gut-punch, especially since his integration into Legends of Tomorrow was so flawless - for someone who didn't exist until the very last moments of Legends season 4, Behrad quickly became a beloved member of the team and it really did seem like he was there all along. In his brief time as a Legend (from the fans' point of view), Behrad became best pals with Nate, he had a hilarious rapport with every other character, and Behrad also had a low-key love affair with Charlie. The shapeshifter will naturally blame herself for Behrad's death as well, since her own sister killed him.

Behrad's sudden death was especially surprising considering Legends of Tomorrow had just written out Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Nora Darhk (Courtney Ford) in the previous episode, "Romeo V Juliet: Dawn of Justness". Much hoopla surrounded the real-life couple's reluctant exit from The CW series, but Ray and Nora's departure was also built-up over several episodes in season 5. Legends of Tomorrow killing off Behrad right after Ray and Nora left throws the series off-kilter and reminds fans that even though Legends is the 'weird and goofy' Arrowerse show, they also are very capable of heartbreaking drama.

The question is whether Behrad will indeed stay dead: Zari confronted John Constantine (Matt Ryan) at the end of "Zari, Not Zari" and demanded that he use the Loom of Fate to bring her baby brother back, which is a plan not so different from the British mage's own scheme to use the magical object to reunite Astra Logue (Olivia Swann) with her deceased mother. However, the best-intentioned plans often run amok in DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Zari seems to be inescapably haunted by personal tragedy and losing her little brother Behrad no matter what she does. Sadly, this could mean Behrad really may be gone forever despite Zari's best efforts.
