Legends of Tomorrow Producer Teases Sci-Fi Jonah Hex Storyline

DC's Legends of Tomorrow vs Comics Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex may soon return to Legends of Tomorrow for a futuristic story down the line - in the style of the science-fiction classic Blade Runner, no less.

Jonah Hex is a popular DC character and Western gunslinger whose adventures are primarily set in the 19th century. Often acting as an anti-hero, Hex has long been compared with Western icon, Clint Eastwood. Hex eventually received his live-action debut in the 2010 box office flop, Jonah Hex, played by Josh Brolin. The superhero time-travel show Legends of Tomorrow opened up the possibility for appearances from DC characters from various time periods, including Hex. Played by Jonathan Schaech, Hex appeared in Legends of Tomorrow in the season 1 episode, "The Magnificent Eight" and returned in the season 2 episode, "Outlaw Country".

In an interview with DC Legends TV, Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Phil Klemmer talked about the possibility of Jonah Hex returning to the series and discussed a potential storyline for the Western hero.

I feel like if we make it back the Old West… I mean, we did have a crazy pitch for Jonah Hex appearing as a future bounty hunter in a Blade Runner-shaped story. We haven’t broken that story yet, but it’s certainly up there on a 3×5 card.

Though putting Jonah Hex in the future would be an interesting twist for the character, there is some precedence for that in the comic books. In the 1980s, DC sent the character into a whole new world by taking him to a post-apocalyptic future that had been torn apart by nuclear war. With motorcycle gangs battling it out in a place without order, the story had the feel of Mad Max, with Jonah Hex filling the role of Max Rockatansky.

Klemmer's idea to have Hex become a bounty hunter in the mold of Blade Runner's Harrison Ford would still be a unique approach to the character, as well as the series itself. It's already been established that Hex has history in dealing with time-travelers and is a friend of Rip Hunter. Hex has boarded the Legends' ship, the Waverider, but has never left the 19th century, so putting him in the future would definitely give him a fish-out-of-water experience. As for as how or why this could happen, It's possible that Jonah Hex could make it to the future by being invited to join Rip Hunter's Time Bureau.
