The latest Legends of Tomorrow season 3 promo video teases The Waverider crew remaking history. Following the time-breaking conclusion of season 2, the Legends are living in a world where dinosaurs roam around modern day America. There are anachronisms like this all around the globe and all over the timeline, and correcting them will be the gang’s main driving force in season 3.
This time around, they’ll have competition. Arthur Darvill’s Rip Hunter has splintered off to form the Time Bureau, a slick FBI-like organization with the history’s best interests at heart. Mistresses alum Jes Macallan recently joined the cast as Special Agent Ava Sharpe, one of Rip’s new employees, who’s been described as “often quite ruthless”. It should be fun to see the wacky Waverider posse bouncing off some serious challengers.
Also joining the Legends of Tomorrow cast for season 3 is Tala Ashe, who’ll play the Muslim superhero Zari Adrianna Tomaz. In this universe, unlike the comics, she heralds from a dystopian future and has the skills of a hacker. Ashe has said that her character “speaks truth to power”, and you can see some evidence of that in this new Legends of Tomorrow season 3 teaser trailer.
The exchange between Zari and Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer is certainly the highlight of this promo. Ray earnestly stating that the Legends have saved the world twice is totally in character for the science wiz/superhero, and Zari’s retort – “Then why does it still suck?” – has a hilarious amount of truth to it. Perhaps Zari will be the foil to Ray’s naïve innocence during season 3 of the show. It’ll be interesting to see how their opinions clash on how to best ‘remake history’ – Ray is a stickler for the rules, but Zari is used to challenging authority and ideas.
However, this trailer does lack one thing: there isn’t much of Caity Lotz’s Sara Lance in it. This former assassin is now the captain of the Waverider, but here she’s reduced to reciting trailer lines about “misfits and outcasts” going up against “a greater evil”. Thankfully, showrunner Marc Guggenheim has teased that Sara will be motivated by guilt in season 3, suggesting that there will be some meaty material for Lotz to chew on once the new season gets started.
It’s still not entirely clear who the main villains of season 3 will be. Despite branching off on his own, Rip won’t be overtly villainous this time around. And although Damien Darhk and Captain Cold are both returning, it doesn’t seem likely that the Legion of Doom will be the main threat two years in a row. Fittingly enough, with regards to what the Legends are up against in season 3, only time will tell.
Legends of Tomorrow season 3 premieres Tuesday, October 10, on The CW.
