The Waverider is going to get a little roomier because DC's Legends of Tomorrow will be losing a team member in the season 3 finale. Despite the sadness at losing a cast member, fans should be excited about the show's renewal for a fourth season, which will include Jes Macallan's Ava Sharpe and Matt Ryan's John Constantine as series regulars.
One of the best parts of Legends of Tomorrow is the show's ability to change the makeup of the team. Adding new characters keeps the storylines fresh, allowing for different relationships and dynamics. This season saw the addition of totem toting Zari Tomaz (Tala Ashe) and Kid Flash Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) from The Flash. Both characters have been welcome additions to the show and add more diversity to a cast already more inclusive than most on television.
In an interview with TV Line, Legends co-showrunner Phil Klemmer spoke about the tragedy to come in the finale. When asked what Macallan and Ryan joining the cast means for the rest of the crew he said the finale makes room for an exit of another team member. Klemmer said, "There’s heartbreak in the finale. A Legend leaves." When asked if it could be Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) because of the way her story has come full circle he added, "As far as her and Nate, I don’t know if love is made to last in the world of the Legends" hinting that even if the couple makes it out of the finale alive, their ending might not necessarily be a happy one.
Fans are used to characters leaving Legends of Tomorrow starting back in season 1 with the departure of Carter Hall/Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) and Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee). Most recently the show saw the death of one half of Firestorm, Martin Stein (Victor Garber), in the "Crisis on Earth-X" crossover. Shortly after, his other half Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh) left as well. However, Jax will return for the Legends of Tomorrow season finale - just in time to (potentially) watch another team member die.
Killing off characters gives Legends of Tomorrow higher stakes. And because the Legends team operates like a family, any loss is devastating and has a lasting effect. It's a refreshing change to see a superhero show where a loss has meaning. However, a character leaving doesn't necessarily mean they are going to die. It could just be that either Amaya or Zari decide to go back to their own time or that another character has had enough of time travel. But, with the word "heartbreaking" being thrown around, it's probably something a little more emotional.
DC's Legends of Tomorrow season 3 finale, "The Good, the Bad and the Cuddly” airs Monday, April 9 at 8 PM on The CW.
