Former President Barack Obama will appear in an upcoming episode of Legends of Tomorrow season 3. Or rather, an actor portraying Barack Obama as a college student will feature in an upcoming episode set in the late 1970s.

This is not the first time that a DC Comics property has portrayed the 44th President of the United States in recent memory. He famously appeared in the first issue of Suicide Squad following the book's reset as part of DC Comics' Rebirth initiativechewing out an unapologetic Amanda Waller. Even before that, President Obama made cameos in a number of comic books - a fact that no doubt amused him, considering the former president is an avid comic book collector who counts Conan The Barbarian as his favorite series.

TV Line broke the news regarding the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow episode. While details of the plot and episode's title remain a secret, the episode will see the Legends traveling to Occidental College in Los Angeles at the time when President Obama was attending the school as an undergraduate.

The role of the young President Obama has yet to be cast. The episode is scheduled to be filmed sometime in early February and should be broadcast sometime in April. The episode is being written by Keto Shimizu and James Eagan.

This is not the first time that The CW series about a team of time-traveling superheroes has featured an American president in a prominent role. The Legends had to step in to save General George Washington before he became the first President of the United States in the second season episode "Turncoat." Earlier that year, Ulysses S. Grant (John Churchill), appeared in Legends of Tomorrow season 2, episode 4, "Abominations". The episode saw Grant - when he was still a Union Army General - fighting a platoon of Confederate soldiers who had been transformed into zombies by a virus from the future.

More recently, "Welcome To The Jungle", the seventh episode of season 3, featured President Lyndon Johnson, who was played by Peter Hall. The episode saw the Legends working to prevent President Johnson's assassination, lest the course of the Vietnam War be changed forever. This was the first time that the show depicted an American president at the time of his presidency. The upcoming episode featuring President Obama is equally historical, being the first time Legends of Tomorrow portrays a still-living President.
