With Legends of Tomorrow, The CW proved that their hands are not yet too full with stories from the the world of DC Comics. The crossover spinoff of Arrow and The Flash seemed like a risky maneuver at first glance, as an expansion of The CW's Arrow-verse as a whole in addition to serving as a way to further expand the once reality-grounded franchise further into science fiction territory (a move that began with the introduction of The Flash, and has since found its way to all corners of the universe). The risk paid off, however, and the series became another hit for the network.
Now that season 2 is just a few months away, fans have been wondering what’s in store for the Legends of Tomorrow team - featuring characters culled from both Arrow and The Flash in addition to new characters introduced in-show. As much as the series stands on its own, it forged a more intimate connection between the already closely related shows from which it spun off, offering implicit hints about the possibility of future collaborations between teams Arrow, Flash, and Legends. While there haven’t yet been any major crossovers between the three shows, that’s something that one Legends of Tomorrow star thinks might be fixed in the upcoming season.
Caity Lotz (Mad Men), who plays Sara Lance a.k.a. White Canary, recently spoke with Movie Fone about what fans might be in store for next year and as the show progresses. The actress was careful not to reveal anything specific, but did suggest some tantalizing possibilities for the Legends team as the story moves on - including some exciting ideas for potential crossovers:
“Crossovers are what I'm most excited for, just because the potential of that! I want to go on The Flash. I want everybody to come on to our show. I want to see, like, especially with Earth Two on Flash, I think it'd be really cool to kind of see the Black Siren, which is Katie Cassidy. I want to see Katie Cassidy and Danielle Panabaker's evil alter egos. I want to go head-to-head with them.”
Adding Earth Two into the mix could make for some interesting storylines for the series, and opens up the door of possibilities wide open. We’ve already gotten some idea about what to expect from that universe, after it was explored so thoroughly on the last season of The Flash. Black Siren, for instance, is the evil alter ego of Cassidy’s (Gossip Girl) Laurel Lance, who died last season on Arrow, causing much grief and doubt in the minds of Lotz’s character. And Panabaker’s (Justified) Earth Two doppelganger Killer Frost could make for some interesting stories with Wentworth Miller’s (Prison Break) Captain Cold.
While all this is still speculative at this point, Lotz also hinted at the potential for a new romantic interest for White Canary, who previously was involved with Katrina Law’s (Spartacus: War of the Damned) Nyssa al Ghul. While Law is now working on the series Training Day, Lotz also hinted that fans might not have seen the last of Nyssa.
“I think Sara might get a new girlfriend! Katrina Law is one of my favorite humans. She's got a new show, so hopefully we can steal her away. She worked it in her deal so that she could come and see us!”
That would certainly be a smart move on behalf of DC and The CW; with the calls for diversity within the superhero genre growing louder by the week, exploring Sara’s sexuality more in depth would be a powerful reminder that superheroes can, and do, come in all shapes and sizes. Beyond that, Sara does need some happiness in her life after all she’s been through the last few years. From her own death and resurrection on Arrow, the loss of Nyssa, and the death of her sister, Sara has had a pretty tough load, and seeing her find any amount of peace would be nice.
It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out when Legends of Tomorrow premieres its second season this fall. They’ve certainly got a solid foundation to build upon as they move forward, and the entirety of time and space to explore. Between that, potential crossovers, and the possibility of trans-dimensional exploration, the possibilities seem endless. We’ll probably now more in the months between now and season two’s premiere, so stay tuned for updates on Legends and all things DC.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th, and Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 17th.
