As a spinoff from the larger DC Comics television universe on The CW, the premise of Legends of Tomorrow was established during the crossover episodes of Arrow and The Flash last season, which pitted the heroes against Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). In the Legends of Tomorrow series premiere, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) assembled a team to carry on the fight against Savage. However, when the crew of the Waverider defeated the villain - and their numbers were left depleted following the death of Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) as well as the departure of Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée) and Hawkman (Falk Hentschel) - the show set up a somewhat different premise for season 2.

The season 1 finale of Legends of Tomorrow introduced Rex Tyler aka Hourman (Patrick J. Adams) and the concept of the Justice Society of America; plus, with the Time Masters destroyed during season 1, that leaves the Legends to pick up the task of protecting the timeline. Along with the new mission, the crew of the Waverider will be getting some new additions - many of which appear in the first poster for Legends of Tomorrow season 2.

The CW released the Legends of Tomorrow poster through the show's official Twitter account, and it includes team mainstays Rip Hunter, Ray Palmer aka Atom (Brandon Routh), Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh) and Martin Stein (Victor Garber) aka Firestorm, Sara Lance aka White Canary (Caity Lotz) as well as Mick Rory aka Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell). The poster additionally features new characters Amaya Jiwe aka Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Nathan Heywood aka Citizen Steel (Nick Zano). Take a look at the poster:

In addition to Vixen and Nathan Heywood, Legends of Tomorrow season 2 will be introducing fellow new characters Courtney Whitmore aka Stargirl (Sarah Grey) and two versions of Obsidian, with the younger played by Dan Payne and the older by Lance Henriksen. Plus, Legends of Tomorrow will welcome a team of supervillains in season 2, the Legion of Doom, comprised of Arrowverse antagonists Captain Cold, Reverse-Flash (Matt Letscher), Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), and Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough).

As the poster for Legends of Tomorrow season 2 indicates, the show will feature "A mission for all time" while the crew of the Waverider traverses space and time in order to join up with the JSA and battle the Legion of Doom. With a slightly altered premise, new team members, and new villains, Legends of Tomorrow is shaping up to be reinvented in season 2.

Since season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow largely left plenty to be desired by fans - even as the show ostensibly provided an exciting time-traveling superhero romp - these changes may help to win back viewers that may have dropped off and reinvigorate fans. But, it remains to be seen how season 2 fares with viewers and fans when Legends of Tomorrow returns in October.
