As recently showcased by the cross-network superhero team-up of The Flash and Supergirl, all the DC Comics television shows developed by Greg Berlanti and his team of producers exist within a multiverse. Prior to the confirmation of the multiverse in The Flash episode 'Welcome to Earth-2,' The CW had built up its corner of the DC TV universe, first with Arrow, then spinning off The Flash, and lastly using both established series to set up the third show, Legends of Tomorrow.

Using a combination of supporting heroes and rogues from both Arrow and The Flash, along with a handful of new characters like Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée), Legends of Tomorrow has followed the team through time and space as they attempt to vanquish Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). Now, a new cast member will join Legends of Tomorrow in the show's season 1 finale and continue on in season 2, which The CW has already given the green light.

EW is reporting that Patrick J. Adams (Suits, Orphan Black) has been cast as a mysterious DC Comics hero. The character has yet to be officially revealed but has been described as a "fun character the fans will love." A previous rumor reported that a "beloved superhero from the DC canon whose mysterious agenda serves as 'a launching off point for season 2'" would appear in the final scene of the Legends of Tomorrow season 1 finale, titled 'Legendary.' According to EW's report, Adams' character is set to appear in the season 1 finale and season 2 premiere with an option to become a recurring character.

The crew of the Waverider started off season 1 including Rip, Hawkgirl, Hawkman (Falk Hentschel), Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh), Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller), and Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell). Though the team has seen a few key changes - the death of Hawkman and departure of Mick Rory - it has largely remain unchanged, but it seems this new DC character could either be a new addition or the major villain for season 2.

As for which DC hero Adams will be playing when he debuts in Legends of Tomorrow, it's unlikely to be the more well-known characters like Batman, Superman, Aquaman, and others already slated for Warner Bros.'s DC Comics Extended Universe. Additionally, TV Line has reportedly ruled out Booster Gold, a time-traveling hero with ties to Rip Hunter in the comics. Previously, it had seemed Booster Gold was the most likely candidate for the mystery hero since The Flash's 'Welcome to Earth-2' teased his existence in the multiverse and DC's Geoff Johns had hinted at the possibility of the character arriving in the TV universe at some point.

Of course, there are plenty of other characters within the DC Comics canon that Adams could be playing aside from Booster Gold. Additionally, with the secrecy surrounding the mystery Legends of Tomorrow character, it's likely we won't have an official confirmation of the hero's identity until much closer to the season finale. That is, unless Legends of Tomorrow is holding the identity of the character back until the season finale airs on May 19th, which may be the case if they're looking to surprise both casual viewers and die-hard DC fans alike.
